as a former omb director i have a particular soft spot for omb and its importance not just of the federal government but its external role as well. i think it's important the omb director and debbie director have the ability to work with members of congress so tightly connected to the appropriations process and authorizing committees like ours. it's also important that you have an understanding and appreciation because omb gets involved in every policy issue and plays a role in the regulatory environment and plays a huge role in working with congress on regulation. this is an important one. we want thorough vetting today ensure we are getting all the issues. it's an important time to come together. we have plenty of crises facing with us. we heard about some immigration challenges this morning. in an earlier hearing. but with regard to covid, everything including raising inflation officially to the health care crisis it creates my concerns about what it's doing in terms of the opioid crisis in terms of overdose deaths, so those lots of issues right now where it will play a critical role.

and i was never notified about that at omb. as a matter of fact i never knew about nih funding gain of function research at a chinese lab until after i left the white house. and after the trump administration was over, i believe. i left in may 2020. that is exactly the type of question and decision that should have been teed up for discussion among policymakers. we have a lot of bashing of the so-called politicization of science and politicians getting too involved in science and political appointees getting too involved in science. there is no way that that research should have been restarted without a fulsome policy discussion in the white house. moreover, the particular grant that's still being investigated, ecohealth, and what happened in that lab should have undergone continuous scrutiny. as to the scientific question about whether or not this particular pathogen, covid, escaped from the lab or not, i think it's a legitimate scientific question that needs to continue to be investigated and it's worth mentioning in the begi
