one of the things that happened at this meeting this past weekend was trump said the train to was not something that would be accomplished ahead of japan's national elections in july. that is obviously something abeeen to hear, takes political pressure off of him, and pushes a potential deal into the fall or next year. on balance, abe has done a pretty good job managing both trump and his desire to appeal to a broader trade audience. shery: and yet, the president again dismissed the north korea threat, which for japan is huge. not only when it comes to intercontinental ballistic missiles, but short range missiles. he says he is in no rush to get a deal with north korea. that must not have sat well with the japanese. >> i imagine that stung a little bit. i don't know if the japanese had a heads-up up that he would say that. my guess is not. discussions in japan, the topic came up, and that is why we saw that tweet a couple days ago. the japanese seem to be taking a broader view of the relationship. to the u.s.g fo for support with north korea, china. if trump tweet something that is not in lawn with with the japanese wants to hear, they will just have to get over it, i guess, and look to the broad

on this trip? what was the main goal? >> so for a couple of reasons. prime minister abet would be for him to be the first foreign leader to meet with the emperor. beyond that, president trump knows that this elevates him on the world stage. as we just saw the ceremony play out, where he was walking along the red carpet and reviewing the military, it certainly elevates him. david gergen said, this is something the campaign probably likes. it makes him look like he is the commander in chief. he is strong. and he is above all the politics back in washington. and so certainly, i do think that this is part of why the president made this long trek. remember, he'll be back in japan next month. and this is a president who does not like to travel. but i think that the president and his team made the calculation that it is an honor. this is something that abe really wanted the president to do. abe told him, if you're going to pick a trip to japan, this is more important than the g20 next month. at the same time, what we just saw play out is exactly what the president and his team

that is an issue on which prime minister abe hasad to hold extraordinarily tough. and he has been urging the president to be much tougher on the north koreans, as well. and i'm sure you'll hear a bit of that, although, as you know, president trump blows hotcond about whether or not kim jong-un is a great dictor or his great friend. robert: the u.s. recently delayed the auto trafs -- tariffs on japan. should we expect a trade deal between the u.s. and japan? david: certainly the president wants one and i think thene ja would like to get there, as well. it's not h ash stakes as it was 25 years ago when i lived in japa and you'd see american presidents show up every six months with a different kind of trade deal on autos or access of americans to the market. obviously, china has eclipsed japan as the second largest economy. nonetheless, i think it's highly likely that you see one. the question is whether you'll only see it after a deal is reached with china. robert: but, david, is a deal with china going to be reached an time soon? we saw this week, chinese telecommuni

and i got to tell you, chris, even though there is a disparity between him and shinzo abe on the issue of the missile tests and the violation of the u.n. resolutions, shinzo abe, the prime minister, went out of his way to make concessions to the president, to in effect compliment him about the way he's been handling north korea, saying, hey, this is a new way of dealing with kim jong-un, maybe i have to give it a try as abe opens the door to his own face to face one on one with kim jong-un down the road. because, remember, this trip as a white house official told me is all about the relationship between these two leaders. yes, there are serious policy business as we saw from these north korea comments as well as other comments that the president made, but in effect most of the trip has been ceremonial events, very lavish ceremonial events like not just the sumo wrestling match or the dinner we're talking about, but the opportunity for president trump to meet the new emperor of japan, he becomes the first world leader to do so. >> and let's not, you know, forget the fact that was a very
