the plane will be found in the depths of the ocean. >> reporter: for family and friends of those on board mh370 the nervous wait for answers continues >>> joining me now via skype from manchester. no structural parts of aeroplanes have numbers on them. tell us how will investigators will see if this is part. mh370. >> it's going to be analyst serial number if it -- that seller nam, if it matches up with the serial numbers that presumably malaysia airlines has in the database. then it will give us a first clue that it does indeed come from the aircraft. at the end of the day, something was going to surface at some point for the aircraft. and fortunately we have now seen the first glimmer of hope. that something may well have surfaced an indication as to the eventual fate of the aircraft. >> we understand that this is parts of the flight surface called a flap around. tell our viewers what this part of the plane does? >> yes, this part of the plane controls the pitch and such like of the aircraft because it's in the air. and it was, i suppose, inevitable that something was going to break off

>> we have shielding on board that can protect from some debris but we cannot protect from all debris. we've recently implemented some changes to the progress vehicle. it had new debris shields on that progress and we are continuing to improve the debris protection capability. we we actively train on orbit just as we train interestingly we train for evacuations of space stations in case we get hit by debris that penetrates the pressure cell. it is our howard highest risk and we are protected with the shielding levels that we can at the station. >> thank you very much. >> you testified that the life space is particularly hard and a lot of scientist left the field. you have any have any concerns about the expertise in that field? especially as we think about missions to mars? >> thank you very much for the question. i'd say the short answer is no. you are absolutely right. those particular functions were very hard hit and we saw about an 80% detriment in the science portfolios and in the physical sciences. one of the great things that has happened since 2011 is that nasa has reinstitute

there were over 1,000 of these loaded on board each one averaging i'd say about 70 75 pounds. very heavy cargo, stowed in the lowest part of the ship, used as ballast. they are so richly marked. we see on the surface of them the shipper's marks. we have receiver's marks. the person who was to pick it up in spain when it arrived. mint marks where it was made, a serial number telling us when it was made. we have carat marks dates, assayers marks and then this all corresponds to a written manifest. so we know who exactly these marks correspond to. and we know who was shipping it. why. and who was to pick it up. and it's, again this tremendous history about the economics of the time. the artifacts that we have from the galleons of the atocha and margarita, we have a little bit of everything that was on these ships from amazing treasures that we know were on there but also the dishes the medical gear, the weaponry the tools. all these other things that took, that were required to keep a little community functioning out in the ocean. they are all here. when people come here and see
