any stories that journalists struggle to file from ferguson just went out on twitter, instagram and otherocial media tools that became news platforms. this story is about more than what is happening in one small town in the mississippi valley in the heat of the night that has tempers and twitter boiling over. it goes right to the core of racial conflict and social divisions in america and the way that those issues are reported. our starting point this week is ferguson, missouri. . >> it's no longer a 24 hour news cycle. it's a 24 second news cycle. history. >> from the moment the first couple of tweets hit and once you reach that first 25,000, it quickly turns into four million or whatever, the next thing you know, those people are spreading it to their networks. you don't need a mainstream platform to access a significant chunk of the population. it's word of mouth writ large. >> or tweeted large. >> to understand what drove the coverage of the ferguson story during its early stages, it helps to understand this: according to data from the washington-based pew research project, 40% of afr

on twitter for a new story that's gone global. this particular story has been trending in a big way in the u.s. but there is plenty of interest and output all around the world. how did ferguson, missouri, population 21,000 become a global dateline? the killing of a black teenager, michael brown on august 9th by a white policeman triggered protests and showdowns with a police force that seemed particularly well armed, remarkably well equipped. the sight of small town police looking like an army have peas wondering why do cops need armored military vehicles? there was the way the police conducted themselves, arresting peaceful protesters, politicians among them, imposing curfews, hand cuffing judgists and tear gassing news crews in a security response that resemble something out of a war zone. in the age of social media, datelines become hash tags. any stories that journalists struggle to file from ferguson just went out on twitter, instagram and other social media tools that became news platforms. this story is about more than what

they've been very active on twitter. and for those of us on the outside trying to follow them, you can actually engage with some of these people on twitter and they're actively tweeting about somewhat mundane things. there was actually a twitter meme where yi fighters were eating up jars of nutella. on the other hand you see very savage things like beheadings. there is a strange duality, a schizophrenia that they're showing this dark, brutal side, but they're also trying to show, at least as they might see it, a more humane side to western audiences. we're not going to buy that as americans, but for people who are potentially sympathetic or fence-sitters, seeing those images can actually be appeal. >> sreenivasan: philip smyth, it seems in the past it was guys holding machine guns in the backdrop of a video. "this is how tough i am." it seems now the bar sihave to be holding a human head in an instagram. >> we've seen stuff like this before. it's not really that new. it's the platforms being utilizeed. twitter, instagram,

i saw you having fun on twitter.ling in life, having fun on twitter, one of the things you do so well. i will let you kick this off. what is this all about? >> there is grand tradition of hugging out important foreign policy disagreements. there was jefferson and adams. there was douglas mcarthur and truman. they really hugged it out. hugging it out is one notch below beer summit when it comes to foreign policy stuff. look, i think what hillary clinton did, first of all, her criticism was largely valid. it was certainly defensible. it was criticism and i think that she had basically the better side of the argument. then, somewhat bizarrely to me, she decided to say i didn't mean it and i wasn't attacking the president. and i wasn't criticizing him when she obviously was. my guess is that she gets out of this episode what she wants. people will forget the apology and remember that she distanced herself from barack obama and his foreign policy which was signal she wanted to send in the first place. ed: let's get lynn i

doubt, who are on that list because of something that they put on facebook or something they put on twitter, or because their phone number popped up in the phone of someone that we think may be in touch with someone whose cousin may be a suspected terrorist in pakistan. and then there probably are people on that where they have actual evidence, and these are dangerous people. so part of the point, beyond the civil liberties argument, is that if your goal is to actually try to prevent acts of terrorism against the united states, you're doing a heck of a job making it more difficult to root out potential terrorists by having so many people who have no connection to terrorism in your lists. >> jeremy skahill from "the intercept," thank you very much for being here tonight. >> thank you.
