on lockdown immediately after the shooting. >> people were allowed to leave that mall about an hour ago. one witness said it was chaotic, and she saw at least one person shot. >> nbc bay area'soncord. what are you hearing at this hour? >> reporter: well, talk about a scary end to 2021 for the shoppers here at the sun valley mall. i spoke to a shopper who said he was on the second floor of the mall. all of a sudden, he heard this loud pop. because it's new year's eve, he thought maybe it's a firework. but when he started seeing all these shoppers just running for their lives, making their way to the exits, that's when he realized this was a shooting. another shopper told me he heard there was an argument near the food court area among some young men, possibly teens, and he says that's what sparked the shooting. again, we are waiting to hear confirmed information from the hayward police department. at this point we're not hearing any reports that this was an active shooter situation. no reports of multiple victims. but the mall is under lockdown, presumably so hayward police can find the gunmen involved.

on our 5:00 p.m. newscast, police are telling us it was a good samaritan who was shot while trying to help a victim at a robbery at a bay area mall. it happened around the sun valley shopping center in concord, a group of people robbed someone inside the mall and when another man approach and tried to help the victim was shot. the shooter and thieves got away. the mall crowded with shoppers on new year's eve. >> we called our loved ones and told them where we were. and, said a prayer. >> concord police tell us the victim is in critical but stable condition. >>> turning now to our coronavirus coverage, california's positivity rate skyrocketed this month. the state reported nearly 16% of covid 19 cases are coming back positive and tests coming back positive. that's a 9% jump from the last update. just two weeks ago, our positivity rate was down to 2.6%. the state's positivity have gone full circle if you look at this graph last on december 31st, last year. the positiity was just over 17%. that's the highest it ever been. by august it came down 2% before cases surging once again. covid testing will be key to keeping covid from sprea
