[applause] with michael here, i thought i might describe my experience with the national guard in my state. the kind of patriotism that exists. whether active duty or reservists or national guard, i've always been inspired by the passion of the people who serve this country. i happen to be in afghanistan and iraq, this was several years ago, about 2007. it was before the surge had been implemented successfully. it was early on. i went from base to base to see members of the national guard from my state, as well as active-duty personnel. as i go to various bases, they came to me -- if you would like me to call your family, a slip of paper with your name and your number and i will call them when i get home. by the time i left, i had 63 pieces of paper in my pocket. this is going to take awhile. i got home on the day before memorial day. on memorial day morning, before the kids get up and we play together, i wi
