eruptions. >> reporter: mount ontake is still active and deadly. more toxic fumes. increasingly strong tremors are raising fears that pressure inside the volcano is building up again, and another eruption may be imminent. hundreds of rescuers were about to resume their search for the missing, but they have been grounded. it's just too dangerous. >> translator: unfortunately, we've had to suspend the recovery operations due to volcanic activities. it's very unfortunate and frustrating. we're well-prepared, but we're no match against the power of nature, and that's a reality i've had to face. >> reporter: this is the moment of saturday's eruption. some unsuspecting walkers watched in horror as tons of ash and stone shot into the sky. as it began to rain down on them, they fled. but they weren't fast enough. the poisonous cloud caught up with them. this group was very lucky to survive. others did not escape. they succumbed to the fumes or were hit by falling rocks. there are more walkers on the mountain whose fate is still not known. the uncertainty i

crews started airlifting bodies out of an the summit of mount ontake.nn's will ripley has much more on that. >> reporter: this rose block is as close as we are safely allowed to get to mount ontake. you can see the emergency vehicles coming through here almost continuously that are carrying people who have been recovered from the mountain to the area where their bodies are identified. the ash continues to rain down on us here which is why we have helmets and we're wearing face masks at times when the air gets thick you can see the seismic activity continuing up on the mountain. the only people who are going up there are the rescuers who are putting their lives on the line to bring back injured survivors. and also bring back the victims, place them on ambulances, and carry them away. those ambulances come here to a former elementary school that has now turned into a morgue where the people who are pulled from the mountain are taken and identified. just a few minutes ago we watched another one of these ambulances come and they pulled a body that was wrapp

. >> thousands of firefighters are on mount ontake, volcano erupted without warning on saturday.rescuers are trying to help those stranded. what is the latest wayne? >> well, that search operation, the recovery operation as well, continues to be a difficult and dangerous one. mount ontake continues to be are active. zoom into the crater, see how active it is at the moment. that eruption happened on saturday. soon after they found that group of 31 climbers who were located near the summit of the mountain all presumed to be dead. the recovery workers had to call off their operation because the situation became too dangerous. the levels of gas in the area where they were working were simply too high so they called it off but on monday morning first thing they were able to get back onto the mountain to continue their work but we're hearing now because of those gas levels and also because of an increased accumulation of ash in the area, that they have had to halt operations in some part of the mountain where they are working. a very difficult and dangerous operation. that death toll s
