you've got companies that are going after oracle in different waysp oracle is trying to make its waynto cloud computing. but let's face it they failed to meet market expectations for earnings as they failed to implement their strategy to deal with this type of competition. like, you know, getting back to the original premise which one of these guys is better. if you put a gun to my head and said which one to buy i would say pull the trigger because i don't like sales force at this price level and don't like oracle underperforming the s&p. >> wow. carter the technicals if you had to line up those two each other and pull the trigger which would you prefer. >> andrew has it right in neither is ideal. sales force is too hot and oracle is too cold, it's just not coping, not participating. of the two we prefer oracle because of the risk/reward. in the case of sales force, something that's up from the june lows, some 60%. it shot the moon, well above trend, we think it's priced in whatever is coming by conit ster nags if you look at oracle the stock hasn't made it back to a 52-week high. li

they've got to bet to the most modern version of sap oracle. they get a proposal from a systems integrator for 10, 30 million to upgrade to a new version of a legacy system. at that point, when they're facing an upgrade, they look at alternatives. that's where we come in. >> now we hear the term big data all the time, eyes glaze over, big data. big data and analysis is also in your world, right? >> i think big data is a misnomer. >> okay. tell me. >> most companies don't have big data. what they have is a variety of data. so in today's world, if you are doing a marketing campaign, you want to look at data coming out of a traditional database, linkedin data, you might want to look at censor data that is coming in from retail in your point of sales. you want to dump it in a database. any type of data and move it into that platform, you don't need to have new data to use these new technologies. >> when i go to salesforce.com websites, they're filled with great testimonials of how they are able to harness a sales force, find out what people want. w

oracle for that matter. palo alto networks recently spoke with the ceo. he offered network security systems throughout many different enterprises. it too is highly valued. some of the analysts were disappointed when the last quarter was reported. the company has a patent with juniper hanging over its head. cyber security is here to stay and makes palo alto on a quarterly miss. the most important report we get comes on tuesday. and that's from the venerable hewlett packard. yes, they will announce earnings that day and david faber and i will be talking to the ceo. this stock left for dead around this time last year now up a staggering 77% for 2013. i don't think it's done. we talk of a bottoming personal computer sales. taking a huge amount of debt to go private. we know hewlett packard has done a ground breaking deal with salesforce.com to extend its cloud reach and extremely valuable printer franchise. we know the company boosted dividend recently. all this sounds pretty positive to me. i would not be surpr

idc recently did a study that says that if you continue the pace, you could pass oracle, but oracle'sn the industry. >> well, oracle is a big player in the industry. but we're actually number one in our segment of cloud computing into life sciences. we're doing something different than oracle. oracle, maybe they're on the client server installed software, this industry cloud is kind of a different thing. more specific. >> let's use an old line pharma company that i will tell you i love, i think they're brilliant but they've been having trouble developing new drugs. what do you do for ely lilly? >> great company. they use all three of our product lines. where we started was helping them revolutionize their field force globally. it's a global company. they have people in japan, europe, china, u.s., et cetera, we're delivering them a salesforce automation tool on the ipad that their people can walk into doctors offices around the world and show the benefits of their product, educate those doctors, so doctors can provide their medicine effectively. that's the biggest thing we're doing. >>

you see that with oracle's cloud revenues which are quite pathetic.y should be superior to ours, but they're not. >> but if they were, the rest of the business would be cut to rivets, no? >> well, i don't think so, but they do. and that's the point. that's how they -- people get brainwashed. that's the hypnosis. that's the crazy part. people all of a sudden say we can't go cloud or they'll destroy our business. the reality is if you don't go cloud, that will destroy your business. those ceos we see, steve balmer exiting microsoft. why? he didn't go social, or mobile, or cloud. he told us he was going to, but he didn't. the reason why you read "the wall street journal" this weekend, what did he say? >> standing amid progress. >> he says he's a representative of the past. >> right. >> dreamforce is a representative of the future. >> okay. let's go big. why was the president not social, mobile cloud for health care? and why didn't he just turn to you or why didn't you tell him how to do it? >> he was for his campaign. and then he didn't do it in this age

oracle, microsoft, cisco, intel, ibm. we don't think of salesforce.com or workday or viva as being tech. we think of the former being cheap and latter as being ridiculously overvalued. and yes, on traditional metrics that's probably true. but sometimes we forget why we invest in tech in the first place. we do not do it for cheapness. we do not do it for dividends, and we certainly don't do it for buybacks. we do it for growth. unfortunately the companies we traditionally think of as tech are often really vestiges and trench players, at least in the uninformed. you don't over 130,000 people coming to dream force to see same old same old. this isn't about a new way to use a personal computer. it's not about the semiconductors, it's about how to use social, mobile and cloud to help your own business grow. now look, i totally get why you might think it's one big dangerous bubble. there is an element of who are these guys, what do i care if some company's helping sales reps sell more drugs or more food or whatever? who wants t
