but orange county, i think i was looking at it 170 new cases for 100,000 people. that's about where santa clara county is. right? and santa clara county is still on the watch list? >> yeah. but, yeah, the state counts them differently. it's a very confused thing between what shows up in the newspapers and what shows up on the state's watch list. it's partly because the state's counting i think -- this is not at all clear -- is counting by indict that the test was done rather than the date the test was reported. so if you get lags in test reporting, it pushes the numbers up, whereas if you look at the date of testing, you can catch the downturns a little faster. >> so are you bothered? are you troubled or not at all by orange county coming off the list? >> i was thinking of going to disneylands this weekend. i think i'll give it a pass. >> yeah. i don't think they're opened right now anyways. so i hear what are you saying. where are the places where cases are surging? because for the most part, it does seem like the numbers are coming down or leveling off. so where

let me ask you, what is the situation right now in orange county?ue to reopen august 21st. that's just a few weeks from where we are right now. would that be possible given the situation in the greater orlando area? >> so, two things are important to note. first, we did push back our opening from august 10th. secondly, we are opening virtually only. and so, for the first nine days of school, all of our children will be doing a virtual platform and not in person. secondly, when august 21st rolls around, only one-third of our children will actually be coming to class. we encourage parents to stay on the platform that is virtual so they won't have to have the extra added safety needs in place for person-to-person, face-to-face learning. and so, about 60% of our parents are going to stay at home and continue that platform that we've encouraged. one-third of our students, the parents say they need to come to school. they will be with us. and about 45% of our teachers say they want to be in the classrooms. >> i'm sure many people want to be in the classro

that's because in orange county they have decided to spend the first nine days of instruction of the semester online only. so all of the 200,000 students here in this county will be doing online instruction and then they have the option to go back to school into the classroom on the 21st. at this point about 37% of parents have opted to send their children back into the classroom, meaning the vast majority will continue with online learning, but even this is controversial. even as the county says that they feel like they are as prepared as possible, putting sanitizing in the schools, requiring masks, doing social distancing with fewer students they're able to distance a little bit better, there is a lot of controversy here in the state of florida because the education department has mandated that school districts must offer some sort of in-person instruction if parents want it this fall and some school districts are pushing back saying that they don't feel it's safe. as a matter of fact, there are at least three lawsuits, two of them here in orange county, trying to prevent in-person
