experts say the spill will have a major effect impact on the beaches of orange county for years, possiblyeven decades. one organization in yolo county is leading the effort to rescue wildlife affected by the spill. the oiled wildlife care network based out of the u. c. davis school of veterinary medicine, sent a team of 15 people to orange county over the weekend. members of that team are now looking for birds and other wildlife that have been harmed by the oil. they say birds with oil covered feathers get cold and lose their ability to fly. with four live birds collected to date. it's much better than we had feared but typically spills of this nature. we're here for several weeks to months. numbers of the groups say they should have a better idea of how many birds and other wildlife have been affected by the oil spill. in the next few days. many organizations in southern california asking for donations. they really just begin the process of caring for the injured wildlife. some of the organized organizations are the pacific marine mammal center in laguna beach, the wetland and wildlife c

the spill was obvious on saturday and it's a crisis along the coast of orange county. let's bring in patrick healy joining us from huntington beach with the very latest. patrick, what do you know? >> reporter: good evening, raj, and of course wind and currents have a big bearing on what happens to an oil spill after it's happened, and in this case the oil spill is being pushed south towards the waters off san diego, and at this point not much more is coming ashore in orange county. where the pipeline failed, it's busy with platforms and ships outside the l.a. long beach port complex. today the pipeline company suggested what may have caused the failure was an anchor for one of those ships. as the orange coast prepares to defend against more oil coming ashore, and as the undersea pipeline company says it's close to confirming the source of the leak, a state official offered a blunt announcement. >> this is a criminal case. >> reporter: no, it wasn't deliberate but possibly the result of negligence or something else, causing beaches to be closed from huntington to dana p

we're talking about that oil spill off the coast in orange county. this is some of the cleanup happening right now in huntington beach. small pools of oily water can also be seen along the shore. tonight governor newsom is there down in orange county, is calling for an end to offshore drilling. the coast guard says its investigators are getting closer to knowing the exact cause. here is what we know right now. the coast guard found a 13-inch split in a pipeline. right now the coast guard isn't sure what caused that split, but it is possible it may have been caused by a ship's anchor. oil is no longer leaking from that pipeline. that's the good news. but the damage is done. >> it's time once and for all to disabuse ourselves that this has to be part of our future. this is part of our past, and we can moralize and talk about the good old days. we can talk about how important these rigs have been to the prosperity of this country and the middle class. but at the end of the day, this is about the stale air of normalcy versus the fresh air of progress. >>

>> well, our orange county health office and our environmental team at the orange county health officeely, monitoring, doing testing. there is a health advisory that has been issued to avoid exercising, running, walking along the beaches, in the area impacted. and so we are hoping that people will, if they live along the beach, they'll try to stay indoors. it is, i know personally, if you're hanging out in the area too long, it does impact your throat. you can feel it. you can kind of taste it. but as the oil moves more sougtd, the wind will carry that. so i heard this morning there wasn't as much vapor in the wear, but why take any chances? we're encouraging people to stay away. another reason to stay away is we're trying to clean this area up and we cannot have people going to the beach and spreading the tar around. we won't be able to clean it up for the long term if that happens. >> are you satisfied with the preventive measures that were put in place there? i think people who don't live in southern california don't really realize that there are oil refineries that dot the landscap

major development in the oil field that occurred on the coast of southern california, the orange county district attorney is calling it a criminal investigation. and so there's a culpability between the energy company at fault and their relationship with federal investigators are to correspond. and tosh suite has more on what is actually raising the red flags. new allegations from the district attorney of orange county says there is great cause for concern regarding this location, amplify energy. the company under scrutiny for the oil spell is housed in the same building as federal regulators, as more than 25000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the water off the coast of huntington beach. more than 2 weeks ago, investigator, se there's still piecing together exactly what happened right now. they're looking at a $1200.00 foot cargo ship that may have dragged its inker or through an underwater oil pipeline, pulling it across the sea floor. but as more information is coming forward, todd spitzer, the orange county district attorney, says it's unlawful for the company under investigation.

it's threatening the shorelines off the coast of orange county. sadly enough. this is not even the biggest one that we've seen to hit the state in recent years. chris wolfe takes a look back at the history of oil spills. we've seen in california over the past few years. >> the oil spill invading the coast of orange county is reported to be roughly 13 square miles in scope originating from a pipeline off the coast of huntington beach connected to an offshore oil platform. the leak has spewed at least 126,000 gallons of crude oil into the pacific ocean making its way to our beaches. the slick blanket of pollution is devastating. but compare this to the blowout on an offshore platform in 1969 that disaster released between 3 4 million gallons of crude oil into the santa barbara channel killing thousands of birds dolphins seals and sea lions. it was the largest spill off america's coasts at the time and sparked environmental policy change and their creation of earth day problems like this. do not happen often. i think it's relatively believes the last oil spill we
