county courthouse in palo alto. this happened around 9:30 this morning. wearing gray and orange jail garb the inmates escaped through a side door of the courthouse near the corner of birch and grant streets. and this key was found just outside the courthouse. the men jumped into a toyota corolla...then ditched that...engine still running...and hopped into a u- haul cargo van that sped off. now they're missing...as the sheriff's department examines how they got away. deputy reginald cooks:".....it is standard operating procedure to have several inmates with one deputy, they are handcuffed, wrist chained and shackled so the deputy can manage and monitor them but we cant say exactly how they were able to get away from him and escape...."
