it looked orange outside. let me give you a quick explanation for why it appears orange in the sky. the smoke particles scatter blue light, which leaves us seeing what appears to be yellow and orange. any particulate matter in the atmosphere affect the way we see light, the way our eyes and brains translate light. water droplets can do that and smoke particles can do it. all kinds of pollutants can do it. you look at a satellite image to show you how thick the combination of smoke and coastal fog we have. let me move along from the satellite image now and give you another view of the conditions outside. this is going to give you a look at conditions above 1,000 feet, where most of the smoke saand aw 1,000 feet and the marine layer that brought us some cooling and brought fog and some lower spots. the layer cape effect at the surface but we've got a smoke deck or smoke layer above where the winds are a bit lighter s. it's just collecting up there, the marine layer is pushing low clouds into the area at the surface and the combination has given us a dark dreary weird looking day. the

we're in the oranges and red. right now you can't see unhealthy air quality levels up in santa rosa, a bunch of oranges. orange reports out to livermore, fremont and redwood city. moderate levels in the south bay but that could be changing. we have the spare the air through friday. i think that will be extended into the weekend. as we showed you, some areas already in the red. here is our live camera looking out at sfo. we have a mixture. we have low clouds mixing in. all that cloud cover is having a huge impact on temperatures. we had temperabove 100 degrees. one spot 70s. 71 in fairfield. lots of 60s and half moon bay in the upper 60s. so we still have the areas of fog, still some smoke. highs this afternoon mainly in the 60s. the warm spots approaching the lower 70s toward concord, livermore and antioch. the temperatures are being pushed down with all that smoke drifting overhead not allowing too much sunshine. smoke could be a part of the forecast on friday and possibly into the weekend. a lot of it depends on

in terms of orange, moving from red to orange. we saw el dorado, klausennevada counties, all move because they met the threshold for two consecutive weeks and remained in the orange tier for at least three weeks -- sorry, in the red tier before moving orange. and one county, mariposa, who met the threshold to move into yellow. this is, i think, a proof point that as counties are able to move, that we see them moving at all levels of transmission. so some that are just now getting case raids and test postivity. down from what were pretty high rates in the summer. being reduced, allowing those counties to move from purple to red. but even smaller counties, where transmission continues to come down. as in the case of mariposa county, seeing some counties achieve the yellow tier thresholds as well. so i think good news all around. but really, a reminder that we, despite seeing the steady, downward trajectory, that we cannot drop our guard. people ask me on an ongoing basis, why the slow and stringent approach. and i'll remind you. we

it was that orange haze up above. but now today, the smoke as mixed down we're just not get the winds, the mix out so the forecast looks let slight improvement for tomorrow but not much you can see the entire area shaded in orange here, this is poor air quality all around the bay area from the coast of the valleys we're talking about wind speeds of 3 maybe 10 miles per hour. maybe a little bit more not much in that is really the big problem now as you get the smoke down near the surface and we're not seeing is winds that are strong enough to mix it out that you can see some places that are just calm and so not much in the way of wind and not a big change in the weather pattern coming our way only incremental each day so only slight improvement over the air quality for tomorrow and as we head in toward the weekend. thank you lawrence, well just how bad is the air this is the. >>24th straight day that a spare the air alert has been in place in the bay area much of the worst of it is in moraine county richman berkeley oa

through was just yellow and orange hues that's all that we saw pretty much all day long yesterday for most of the bay area now the big question everyone is asking is will it look like that again today well here's a live look from your berkeley cam right here and you can obviously still see that we do have an orange glow to it out there whether that were in just as intense as yesterday remains to be seen. but what we will see is a lot of smoke out there so we are going to have an impact with at least hazy and darker skies than usual as of right now we are seeing poor air quality for much of the north bay in the east bay, still some moderate conditions holding on a little bit closer to the coast in fact are impact as yesterday as compared is pretty similar. we have a thin marine layer just as we did yesterday for parts of the bay. we also still have smoke sitting right above us so we do have similar conditions as to what yesterday brought us and obviously that brought us a lot of orange a lot of darkness to this smoke and that lack of sunlight is going to keep temperatures down today. d

what up is with this orange sky? the smoke particles scatter blue light, leaving us orange and red. that's why we have the orange sky as you look up to the sky. here is the satellite. hard to believe that some areas are cleat completely in the clear. here is the smoke production as we come in closer, especially closer to the bear fire. there was an intense firefight last oroville. so a lot of smoke production there, and that has been that n setting up for today. as far air quality sensors at the surface, we're just showing you unhealthy for sensitive grabs in vacaville, san francisco and oakland, more moderate levels, and in san jose, moderate levels as well. as we check out the upper level wind pattern, you'll see this. that northerly flow is starting to back off as we head into thursday, but i still think we're going to have smoke drifting overhead as we head into your thursday, especially as we head into your thursday morning. we'll talk more about this forecast coming up in just a little bit. >> thanks so much, mark. really appreciate that explanation. >>> all right. now to the

i have seen a few orange reports reporting unhealthy for sensitive groups.have an unhealthy level closer to modesto this afternoon. the spare the air alert has been extended. it was supposed to expire through today. it goes on through friday. here is an actual, i kind of prepped this graphic to show the upper level wind patterns. you will notice the air right now, moving from the north to the south. this pattern, and i will put this into motion and take this into thursday. you will see the pattern change a little bit so they defined it northerly flow goes away. we will still be impacted by the smoke. and still the upper level way pattern could have an impact on the smoke pattern for tomorrow. it is very hard to predict. and as we take this into tonight and thursday. maybe the levels will improve a bit and your thursday and we will not clear out the smoke at all. we will continue to track this and have more on your weather pattern. coming up in just a little bit. >>> dozens of fires across oregon and washington state and california are burning. one fire we ar
