all this according to our brand-new cnn orc poll. let's get to our chief national correspondent, john king, over at the magic wall. >> a six-point national lead. the president benefited most from his convention. let's look deeper at the other numbers. let's look here -- here's one of the big reasons why. this is among men. the republicans almost always have a big advantage among men. the president, this is a tie essentially. the president with a one-point lead among men. but look at the difference. going into the democratic convention, it was governor romney who had a big lead a 12-point lead among men. that's one of the reasons the president comes out of his convention in much stronger shape. then you ask people who's best in touch with the middle class? this has been a huge battleground in this election. a 20-point lead for the president when you ask the question, which candidate is most in touch with the middle class? governor romney's always trailed in this one. but he came out of the republican convention with a bit of a bounce.

meantime a new cnn/orc poll shows president obama with some post-convention momentum. tied at 48%. cnn political editor paul steinhauser live in our washington bureau. so is this the widest we've seen the gap? >> it appears to be the widest in quite some time in our polling and in other polling. christine, how did we get there? how did we get from dead even a week ago to the 52-46 now? let's look behind the numbers. favorable ratings. this is interesting. look at the president's favorable rating today as opposed to one week ago. a six-point jump for the president. you can see mitt romney's numbers going down from 53% to 48%, you know favorable rating. also strong and decisive leader. take a look at these numbers. another change, too. the president now at 50%. romney at 44%. very different story a week ago. and one other number that kind of explains how we got from there to here. that is which candidate has a clear plan for solving the country's problems? it was 45-39. romney a week ago. now it's 45-39 president obama. i think you put all three of those together and tha

this is our most recent cnn/orc poll.ericans, 54%, say marriage between gay or lesbian couples should be recognized as valid. so a majority of americans support same sex marriage. if you look at these numbers from gallup, you can see how public opinion has changed over time. yellow line is those who say it should not be valid. the green line is those who favor same sex marriage. you notice right here, sometime in late 2010, 2011, those lines crossed to where you have even in the gallup numbers now, a majority saying yes, country's split 50-48 saying no and the gallup numbers. here's the interesting part. does it help the president gin up turnout on college campuses and the like. if you look at states where -- the six states, let me move this out of the way, if you look at the six states where same sex marriage are allowed, those are the very light green states here, two of them, iowa and new hampshire are presidential battlegrounds. we might get a sense on election day if it helps on the margins. >> jessica, has the presi
