string orchestra repertoire is pretty small. i used to be boxed into small repertoire. kept constantly looking for new repertoire and commissioning new arrangements. if you look at the first of the program you have very early, young vibrant mendelson; fabulous opener and then you have this fabulous concerto written for us in the orchestra. is our gift. msk(music) >> and then you have strauss, extraordinary piece. the most challenging of all. string orchestra work. 23 solo instrument, no violin section, now viola section; everybody is responsible for their part in this piece. the challenge is something that i felt not only that we could do , absolutely could do, but i wanted to show off. i can't tell you how aware i am of the audience. not only what i hear but their vibes, so strong. i have been doing this for a long time. i kind of make them feel what i want them to feel. there is nobody in that audience or anywhere that is not going to know that particular song by the fourth note. and that is our encore on tour. by the way. i am proud to play it, we are from san franci

i mentioned tchaikovsky and they sent me back a demo of seeing the orchestra part, the whole orchestraart done by voices in a way that blew me away. humorous because hearing voices playing all of the orchestra part is interesting and makes you smile but it is also a bufo piece of music and it was a way to include them and me together, a violent -- also a beautiful music and it was a way to include them and me together. tavis: straight no chaser did a special for pbs and did really well. they are coming into their own now. people will start to appreciate them even more. >> i hope so. that is the fun of these albums. each of these people have their fans. people who are not in classical music, my hope is to always get some of those fans to hear my name and they may know nothing of me at all and it happens. when i do stuff with josh grogan, he has so many fans. and i have so many people after my fascicle concert say i'd never heard of you until i heard the song with josh grogan and now they are classical music fans, which i think is something that we need to reach a larger audience. tavis:

we visit in to become investments to the private sectors as well as and join our community based orchestras that we, only succeed to put private monies in and their campaigner. our biggest environment is when people want their families to come to san francisco. that's the biggest investment. in order to do that you've got to have schools and a community partnerships and the rest of city government engaged. that's why we have over 1 hundred people engaged in this vision for our groups. we have reenvisioned how we can be more innovative & welcoming. so i want to take the opportunity to thank the secretary and thank president obama for gufz this up to this point for reenforcing the president's view we're about creating lards of opportunity for the community. i can't stress how important that is. and to link that up i've been proud to create 6 thousand summer jobs for kids and when they talk to a their parents and they're excited about getting the summer jobs and that's again what president obama has given us when we started this summer jobs plus now we've got 6 thousand jobs this summer. i'll
