string orchestra repertoire is pretty small. i used to be boxed into small repertoire. i kept constantly looking for new repertoire and commissioning new arrangements. if you look at the first of the program you have very early, young vibrant mendelson; fabulous opener and then you have this fabulous concerto written for us in the orchestra. is our gift. msk(music) >> and then you have strauss, extraordinary piece. the most challenging of all. string orchestra work. 23 solo instrument, no violin section, now viola section; everybody is responsible for their part in this piece. the challenge is something that i felt not only that we could do , absolutely could do, but i wanted to show off. i can't tell you how aware i am of the audience. not only what i hear but their vibes, so strong. i have been doing this for a long time. i kind of make them feel what i want them to feel. there is nobody in that audience or anywhere that is not going to know that particular song by the fourth note. and that is our encore on tour. by the way. i am proud to play it, we are from san fran

youth orchestra is the premiere youth orchestra program in the philadelphia region. since 1939, as you mentioned, we have provided very high and advanced music training in orchestral studies for young people like olivia. we have multiple program divisions which students can participate in all the way from the beginning. where olivia was a student seven years ago in our prism program. it's for young string players like olivia who started out in fifth grade, and she matriculated through all our division programs to end up as principal bassist of the philadelphia youth orchestra. so time competitive, but we welcome all students from the greater delaware valley region. >> olivia, tell me about your experience. louis was saying you've been involved with them for seven years now? >>' been involved with prism, i started there. then i moved up to plo, now i'm in po. i learned about how to be a good leader, teamwork, being a good community member. just all facets of my life have really benefited from music. >> i'm sure it looks good on a college resume, college application, t

(narrator) in a mountainous region of bosnia herzegovina close to sarajevo, a sheep herding community has developed a unique singing style known as ganga. this genre, which is primarily sung outdoors in groups, closely reflects the conditions and life style of the highlander commity. in bosnian highlander culture, specifically in mt. bjelasnica, people will spend a lot of time outdoors since it's the herding culture. they will spend a lot of time up in the hills all alone looking down into the valley. and if somebody's passing through the valley, they certainly want to be heard. the idea for sky orchestra came from visiting tunisia.taying in a small town on the edge of the desert right in the south of tunisia. and in the middle of the night as i was laying in this sort of , dark hotel room, a minaret started calling right on the edge of town, and a few minutes, another one started calling slightly closer. and after a while, there were 10 minarets calling from different parts of the town across the city. it was a very beautiful experience. and it just sort of lifted me into a space on the edge of sleep. i came back to bristol and bumped into a hot air balloonist. the sort of came to me, this idea that i could re-create that edge of sleep, musical sculptural experience by strapping speakers onto hot air balloons and playing music to affect people's sleep. and we would fly over cities to sort of inspire people's imaginations. ♪ that was probably the first artwork that i made where i realized that actually instead of inviting the public to come into a museum, or an opera house, or a theater, that actually we can deli
