i want to begin with oren liebermann live at the pentagon. oren, you are learning more and more details about the strikes. what do you know now? >> reporter: the u.s. carried out strikes over a period of 30 minutes. four locations in syria, three in iraq. it appears one you're seeing here, although at this time the pentagon, defense department not confirming the locations, but in iraq this is a location they have struck before. meanwhile, the director of the general staff d.a. sims says they are confident in the success of their strikes and in the targeting. in terms of the list of targets, 85 different targets across those seven locations. more than 125 precision munitions used. in terms of what was struck, it's not just weaponry but command and control centers, intelligence centers, logistics hub. a clear attempt to go after the iranian-backed militias. there is no expectation that the attacks will absolutely stop but the goal of the administration here was to send a more powerful message than has been sent in the past. this is the first ti

oren leiberman at the pentagon, thank you. up next to nic robertson live in tel aviv tonight. nic, notably iran said after the three u.s. soldiers were killed on sunday they did not want war. the u.s. was clearly trying to send a message to iran with this, so what do we know about how they're responding? >> well, we don't have any indication from the iranians per se yet, however, i think it's worth noting as well the president of iran also said in that same statement that they would do with bullies authoritatively and with strength. so i think the indication is that the iranians will choose to hit back through their proxies. undoubtedly indeed one of those proxies this evening just minutes before the strikes took place in iraq saying they were waiting for orders. clearly the implication seems to be they're waiting for orders from iran. they're an iran-backed proxy, so that would be a reasonable conclusion. we don't have anything from iranian officials about this yet. it's very clear that there have been strikes on some of these targets previously. not as devastating as the one

oren sort of alluded to it, but what i'm curious to get your perspective on how these u.s. made components, these parts wind up in enemy hands >> yeah, it's quite an extensive operation. boris and one of the key things to note is that north korea has been a long history of actually evading sanctions. so what they're doing is they're coming in, they're using front companies in various locations. many of with them in asia to buy up products in the global supply chain that they can then turn around in use in their weapons manufacturing process. so for example, a guidance system that would come in a using the various chips that they, they use. and that would be part of is system that is in the supply chain. normally the north koreans would by that guidance as more of the components of that guidance system, and then take that to north korea, build the missile, incorporate the guidance system in that nestle and then ship the completed missile to russia and then it ends up in ukraine. that way so colonel as oren was just laying out for us, the us recently targeted some front compa

let's get straight to oren liebermann at the pentagon. oren, what's the latest here? >> john, these strikes occurring in the last couple of hours in yemen. the u.s. airstrikes targeted a number of houthi drones in yemen. this is what we've even the u.s. doing over the course of the past several weeks, trying to strike the types of targets that the houthis, the iran-backed rebel group in yemen have used to target not only international shipping, but commercial vessels operating in the red sea and the gulf of aden and warships. in this case, the strike was unmanned drones that the houthis have used to target these commercial vessels. was also in the past, the u.s. has targeted anti-ship ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles. the goal here is to target these before they can be launched that is before they pose a security threat to ships operating in the region. we have seen recently the houthis successfully strike a number of ships, including an oil tanker that burned for quite some time, issuing a distress call that the u.s. and other warships responded to. y

let's get back to oren liebermann at the pentagon.ou have new reporting about how the strikes are unfolding as nick reports on those sites. we believe that the strikes are happening there at this moment. >> reporter: we are learning more at this point about what sorts of platforms were used to carry out the attacks in iraq and iran. the b-1 lancer bombers were used as part of the attack. it is significant because past attacks in syria have been carried out by f-15 and f-16 fighter jets. those platforms, those jets can still carry a bunch but they are limited because they are smaller planes than what you are seeing on the screen right here. this is one of three of the largest bombers in the u.s. inventory along with the b-2 and the b-52. it is able to carry much greater punch than a much smaller fighter jet. so multiple b-1 bombers were used and that gives you a sense of the scope and sort of the range of the attack itself. it suggests a much broader attack as we wait for information on the specific targets that were hit. it suggests a
