we have team coverage on this story with our oren liebermann. en live in northern israel and our ben wedeman across the border in southern lebanon. oren, starting with you, fair to say this is the most serious cross-border exchange we've seen between these two nations since 2015. where to things stand now? >> reporter: at the moment, we hear a drone overhead and the israeli military, the idf remains on red alert. aside from that it's a very different story than it was just 24 hours ago on sunday afternoon when hezbollah in lebanon fired anti-tank missiles at israel. one of those anti-tank missiles hit a building in this military headquarters right here behind me. another struck a military vehicle about 1/4 of a mile from where we're standing. the idf says there were no injuries or casualties in those strikes. the idf responded with a series of artillery fire, some 100 shells they say from the area which those anti-tank missiles were fired as well as other targets in southern lebanon. they say they used what they called limited helicopter fire, bu

oren liebermann is live with the details. where is this headed? >> reporter: the just wrapped up meetings doing what he can as he promised to break through months of political deadlock in israel. he's invited netanyahu and gantz here tonight. a closed door private meeting to try to find some way out of this mess. it's not quite clear what he can do since none of the sides in israeli politics at least at this point seem to be willing to give ground. benny gantz will meet for the first time with the trump administration's peace team. that happened moments ago signaling that washington is getting ready for the possibility that maybe it's not netanyahu they'll be working with. there was another major announcement coming out of the meetings with the president. decided they would recommend benny gantz as the next prime minister. only once in the history of the country have the arab parties made a recommendation for prime minister. that was 27 years ago. back in 1992 they recommended razin. it is a major milestone that davis decided to do so especially b

cnn's oren liebermann is live in jerusalem with the very latest.ng, does that guarantee success? >> well, it's an excellent question at this point, and one that remains unclear not only to the candidates but to the entire country as well. the effort to try to get a unity government here is essentially the initiative of israel's president who says the public has clearly voted for a unity government, and now it's time to make that happen warning that a third round of elections is not good for anybody here, not the politicians, and not the public. so israel's president hosted netanyahu and gantz last night to try and kick off this initiative. negotiating teams have already begun meeting from the two parties. but if neither side here is willing to give, it's unclear what, if anything, can actually be accomplished and as of right now, neither gantz nor netanyahu have signaled they're willing to give up on their core issues. netanyahu says he's standing by his ultra orthodox and right wing partners, which means his ability to negotiate is quite limited.
