here's cnn's oren liebermann. >> reporter: i'm oren liebermann in jerusalem for the unprecedented startial of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the first time in israel's history a sitting prime minister has been indicted and is on trial, will be sitting in the defendant's seat in the state of israel versus prime minister benjamin netanyahu. netanyahu has maintained his innocence all long. his government ministers and allies have attacked the investigative process, the attorney general, and the legal system in this case, and there are expected to be protests outside of jerusalem district court today, both in favor of and against netanyahu. in terms of what happens today in court, frankly, the answer is not all that much. today is about making sure the defendant, netanyahu, understands the charges against him. he's not required or expected to enter a plea, and he may not even say anything at all, allowing his lawyers in this case to do the talking. the rest is arguments about scheduling, about timing, about evidence. the actual trial itself, the presentation of evidence, the hearing of

and cnn's oren liebermann joins me now from jerusalem. so, oren, what is the latest on this?reporter: rosemary, this is a threat we've heard numerous times from palestinian president abbas in the past, although this time he appears to go further, even giving a specific date for the dissolution of the security agreements and agreements between israelis and palestinians. still no immediate change seen on the ground after the broad and sweeping announcement. in fact, there's been no response from israeli officials, that as western officials and diplomats we've spoken with wait to see what actually changes in the immediate future with some even expressing skepticism that anything real would change. to that end, if abbas were to carry this out to its conclusion, that would be he'd be dissolving the palestinian authority and the general said that is not happening at this point. so there is at least some limitation on here. if that was the case, what was the point of abbas' speech, and a powerful one at that? well, he may be trying to draw attention, essentially, to the plight of th

cnn's oren liebermann is following his visit from jerusalem. he joins me now live.o why would the u.s. secretary of state take a trip to israel in the middle of a pandemic? and what all was achieved at this meeting? >> reporter: well, rosemary, secretary of state mike pompeo and his team said this visit was at the invitation of the israeli government. and of course, we all know that the coronavirus pandemic, pompeo and his team said this was an important chance to meet face-to-face with the israelis, which they haven't done in a while, and advance and execute the foreign policy of the trump administration. in terms of what we heard between pompeo and netanyahu, there wasn't any big announcements. we know what they expected them to talk about, and that is top of their agenda, from the trump administration's plan for middle east peace, coronavirus, iran. so, all of these were pretty much expected. netanyahu says that with the national unity government that israel is set to swear in tomorrow, there is a chance here to advance peace and security under the basis or on th
