metro started operating the orion 6 diesel buss in 2000 and last night, the entire orion 6 fleet was taken out of service while metro continues to investigate the fire. tuesday morning, one of the buses did catch foyer on route other in maryland. there were no passengers on board the bus at the time. it was being driven by a mechanic. but it was the second incident in just two weeks. last thursday, another orion 6 bus caught fire on i-66 in fairfax. no passengers at the time and no injuries there. all 94 of the buses out of service. they are 12 years old. the agency does not believe age is a factor in the fires but that the board also realizes it may be time to replace them. >> we bring on about 100 new buses every year and we have a fleet of just under 1500 buses. that is sort of the cycle we find ourselves in. if we have to take additional steps as a result of having these 94 on the side, we'll work with the board of directors to figure out a solution for that. rotor buses did cost $280,000 apiece. metro says it does have a number of buses that it holds in reserve to respond when m
