what we are talk about with orion and the space system is just that very fact. >> let's talk about this2017. this is more advanced than the space shuttles, right? so what will it involve? >> for one thing, take us a lot farther than we've been really since 1972 in space. as a matter of fact, this unmanned mission at the end of the year will travel to an orbital altitude of more than 3,000 miles, just by comparison, the international space station orbits 250 miles, where the shuttle spent most of its time. so, this is developing into space in a much deeper way and this mission in 2017 that is contemplated would actually send astronauts in the vicinity, although still kind of sketchy, in the vicinity of an asteroid, which may, in fact, be captured and brought into closer proximity to earth for astronauts to do a long distance mission into deep space, practice space walking techniques and also in the course of all of this, learn a little something about redirecting asteroids, which is an important thing. just ask a dinosaur. >> before we let you go, we also wanted to ask you frequently abo

launch system rocket, the big rocket nasa is building which would lift a thing called theo ryan -- the orionpace capsule to perhaps a vicinity in the moon and are looking at a flight to 2017 as a shakedown. but then you have commercial cargo services and these are paying for commercially operated capability to do what the space shuttle used to do, vary goods and services and eventually crew to the international space station that remains about $3 billion a year, the nation's premiere human space flight program. host: to the headline you showed, is there disagreement about the building of this rocket among the members of congress? guest: well, there's less disagreement with the big rocket between members of congress than there are with members of congress and other people within washington, d.c. the big rocket actually has quite a good reputation on capitol hill, although it was not admittedly the white house's priority when the obama administration came in and began making decisions about what to fund within human space flight. so currently the sfls rocket is set up for a big increase if the

and we know that the space launch system, and the capsule called orion, which is being built as we speak, assembled at the o.n.c. building at the kennedy space center, we know these are critical to human exploration. and nasa has a very boring term for them. they call it "foundational capabilities." that is the capability of putting humans into deep space and eventually on mars. and while other countries are talking about a heavy lift rocket, we are actually building it and it's being built today with its spacecraft. and now we're going to look to the first test of this spacecraft. it's going to come in just a few months. it's the orion spacecraft on top of another rocket to do the deep space penetration and hig high-velocity reentry, pulling lots of g's, to see how the instrumented spacecraft performs. it's on track and the space launch system is on track. however, the funding increases are going to be maintained -- they're going to have to be maintained in the future years. if we go back to this, shall i say, i -- i have other adjectives for it, but shall i say not the best idea of tak
