first of all, tell me about the orion, how you are able to help. >> the p 3 orion is one of the navy'saritime patrol aircraft. it has sensors that allow us to be effective at search-and-rescue. we deploy the sensors on the aircraft such as radar and high definition cameras as well as visual observers to search the ocean for indications of a crash site or anything associated with a missing aircraft. >> so you were part of the first flight. tell me how it went. what did you see, if anything? >> well, we launched out of naval air station in the middle of the afternoon. and took just a few hours to transit out to begin our search in the middle mediterranean. and we observed a good search conditions out there with decent visibility and fairly calm seas. we spent just under six hours out in the area searching working with the helenic armed forces who were coordinating the rescue efforts when we were out there. our search did not turn up anything associated with the missing aircraft. >> how -- explain to me how it is that you all are i imagine just playing a role and then communicating to who

now one of the ways the united states is trying to help find it is a p-3 orion, as the aircraft goes over the region, it will drop little sonar buoy, will come down on parachutes and hit the water and send out information to see if they can pick up any debris. the problem is the plane doesn't tell you specifically what kind of debris there is, and if you've been in the mediterranean, as i have, there's a fair amount of garbage floating out there, and this can pick up debris, but it won't tell us what sort of debris it is. and the effort to find the black boxes, the one thing to remember here and joe kind of referred to this, is what we want to know is what happened. at this point, while they're still calling ate search and rescue, the likelihood of anybody falling out of the sky at 30,000 feet and surviving is small, but with this equipment that does what it's called a persistent stare, the eye never blinks, with infrared to sound waves, all of that seems to suggest that there was some sort of explosion, that can't answer the question of whether this was a mechanical failure or wheth

there is request for p-3, from a p-3 orion essentially a spy-plane. has number of sensors.raft, good at sub hunting. this is good aircraft to assist in this type of search-and-rescue. we're told the navy and militaries in the region will gather intelligence from what happened. there are a lot of different sensors in the region not just from the u.s. navy but other militaries. it will take a couple days to look what they have from satellite imagery and sensors and signals intelligence and what they can share they will. bill: it is still a big ocean out there and locating this and trying to pinpoint is not easy. but the p-3 orion, that has the ability as you describe it to look down through the depth of water, correct? >> it is an excellent for platform for looking for something in the water and excellent platform to try to find this debris and try to assist in locating it. but again, you know there will be a number of different assets in the area. i believe that if, asked the u.s. navy will support with air assets as well. we saw a lot of this in the support for the missing
