former new orleans mayor ray nagin soon may be heading to jail guilty. nagining corruption charges including accepting $500,000 worth of bribes. al jazeera has been following the story from new orleans. ben, what did the jury say? >> reporter: well, del, as you might know he was charged with 21 counts of different types of corruption including bribery and kickback schemes. the jury found him guilty on 20 of those 21 counts. count number 7 involved a bribery charge with a family business and investment that was to pay off the mayor for city contract. but the jury came in moments ago and deliberated for 6.5 hours. three on monday and three and a half today. this is day 11 of this trial. as we talked before, one of the great mysteries was many people figured the mayor had the opportunity to take a deal with prosecutors. this is an investigation that has been at least four years in the making. six other people have pled guilty or been convicted on charges to nagin's case. giving him a page out of the playbook of the prosecutor. essentially he saw the evidenc

essentially, is ben lemoin is are outside the ne new orleans courthouse. do we know why the mayor didn't agree to a plea deal? >> nagin had an advantage in this case, six other people had been charged, indicted, five of them pled guilty, one of them went to trial and was found guilty, and obviously, mayor nagin knew what the evidence was prosecutors had. he was indicted last year, that eliminated the possibility of taking a deal from federal prosecutors. prosecutors laying out their case, presenting a long laundry list of different types of paper trail evidence. bank statements, financial statements, phone records, and of course, city contracts. the mayor is accused of taking money and bribes from state contractors in return for giving them the contracts. over the past two weeks, defense attorneys have denied all of these allegation is, saying everything he did, every contract he granted was strictly for the benefit new orleans. >> ben lemoin, thank you very much, we'll wait for the jury's decision. >>> at this hour wall street seems to be in a holding pat

the decision came in a new orleans courtroom just a short time ago. a jury found the former new orleans mayor guilty of bribery, guilty of corruption, guilty of fraud, guilty of money laundering, guilty of false tax reports. found him guilty on 20 of 21 counts against him. the one he was found not guilty on was a bribery charge but he was found guilty of receiving a $200,000 bribe from one man and a $25,000 bribe in a separate case from that same man. his family sent on lush vacations to hawaii and beyond while he sat back in new orleans messing with the city. all of this crime and corruption began before the hurricane in 2005 and continued after it. the accusation spanned his two terms at mayor. it included the landfall and aftermath of hurricane katrina. he went after and accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of bribes for people doing business with the city. in other words, you want to help clean up new orleans, you got to pay me. i'm the mayor of a place he called chocolate city. bribes in the form of money, of free vacations in hawaii a

>> reporter: -- sigh across the city of new orleans, as many people did expect a verdict from the juryth sides were here, kind of milling about, the jurors sort of came in, one by one, and then they were missing one juror, even an hour and 15 minutes after they were supposed to be there. so the judge said, look, we're not going to have deliberations today. everybody was expecting a verdict on the 21 counts against ray nagan, but that is on hold now, so we'll have to wait until tomorrow at 9:00. no word on what happened to the juror. we'll have to see tomorrow morning if that person returns. there are four alternates in this case, but yet the judge told the alternates that they could go home if they wanted to. so we're not sure if they are here or will be available tomorrow. >> ben, one of the reasons they were expecting a quick verdict in this case is because there were so many guilty pleas leading up to this case involving some of ray nagan's top aids. if he is found guilty does he face jail time? >> oh, he absolutely faces jail time. this has been the big mystery among the political

ben for us in new orleans. still to come on al jazeera america, the study that questions whether mammograms help women get a jump on breast cancer. >> one of the world's most in-depth studies of breast cancer is casting more doubt on a long-standing practice. the report found mammograms do not help prevent breast cancer deaths. jennifer london has hour report. >> reporter: this is one of the largest studies ever conducted of 96,000 women, and the findings are sure to renew the debate and even confusion over the efficacy over mammogram. it was published in the british medical journey. it found that death rates were the same for women who got mammograms and those who did not. when you look at the numbers of those who received mammograms and diagnosed with cancer, 500 died. with those who did not go through the screening and diagnosed with cancer, 505 died. additionally women who got mammograms were more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer. which on the surface sounds like a good thing, but that can lead to
