senator orrin hatch things so.ning us this morning. >> happy to do so. >> you know, it does sound like there is some thawing and maybe there's some movement between the two sides. the front page of "the wall street journal" lays out how president obama may not be wedded to making sure that marginal tax increases are raised. is that the key to finding some sort of a solution between the two sides? >> well, there are two things. one is to not raise marginal tax rates, find the savings elsewhere, but also that we won't raise tax rates at all. certainly because we just think you've about got to have structural entitlement reform. we know they're in trouble. we also know we're spending more money today than we've ever spent in history except during world war ii. and frankly we know that our revenue base will come back to where it usually is at 18, 18.5% and probably a little bit more. so republicans just don't want to raise tax rates. we want to find the monies the president would like to have elsewhere in the code and

chuck grassley, inside -- installed judiciary, and orrin hatch? >> i think both of them have established their bona fides over the past couple of years. i think it will be fine. grassley has been enough of an attack dog. same thing with hatch -- that i did not think they will have any problems continuing. do what they are doing. >> hatch, i think, suggested when he was running in his highly contested primary that he would be less of a lucy who see deal cutter than he was for much of his career. >> he also said he knew was never running again. >> that is true. after he won the state party convention, which is how they do it in utah -- the primary is sort of secondary -- he came out and told us back in august at the republican convention that he was very committed to tax reform, he wanted to work on it. max baucus, chairman of the finance committee, also committed. it could be interesting. now that hatch has said i am not going to run again and he got past that, he could kind of do what he wants to do. he could do the deal maker that he is and wants

my biggest supporter on the senate judiciary committee was senator orrin hatch.e wrote an ro biography in which he takes great pride in the president, president clinton having called him before he nominated me and before he nominated just prior and said i'm thinking of nominating ruth later ginsberg, steven briar, and i said they would be ok. it was that bipartisan spurred, there were no hardboiled questions. they were mostly using me to speak through me to their constituents to show how caring they were, how well informed they were, they spent a lot more time talking with us than i did. the white house was very concerned about my aclu connection. i helped launch the women's rights commission and had been on the council for seven years. there was not a single question about my aclu affiliation. that would not have happened in recent years. i think what it will take is a great statesman on both sides of the aisle. this is not to fall one party rather than the other. it started with bob bork with the democrats. babbitt been the over 30-vote on someone as superbly q
