"nbc 10's" pamela osborne is live with an update. pam, what have you uncovered? >> reporter: vai, i did stop in to police headquarters here to get an update on that investigation. i was told the chief wasn't in yet so there weren't any updates available right now. what i can tell you is that investigators believe that the teen who was shot and killed was not the intended target. matt nichols was only 14 years old. this photo was taken two days before he and his cousin, also pictured here, were gunned down outside of a corner store on the city's west side. investigators believe the teens were not the intended targets. police recovered 30 shell casings from the corners of pine lane and tenth street. janine shipley is related to the teens. they were all together at the time of the shooting. she was also hit by one of those bullets. >> he knew that there was kids out there. there was kids out there. like no rewards, no nothing. they didn't care. >> reporter: police are offering a reward leading to the arrest while the family hopes and prays the shooter has a change o

pamela osborne is live for us at city hall. good morning, pam. >> good morning. you know, i spoke with someone who is a part of the coalition that's representing small businesses, who are against that tax. they tell me that small businesses and families are going to be hurt by this. right now, in council chambers, the kinney administration is defending that proposed tax that would add a 3 cent per ounce tax on sugary drinks. the mayor says it's necessary and could generate $400 million. it's money he wants to use to fund universal pre-k and other programs. he also wants to make improved to parks and recs. it isn't against the programs inmayor is trying to support, but they do have concerns that the tax itself would be able to support those programs. they also do not think that the individual customers or consumers rather would be able to deal with that extra cost that they feel is going to get passed on to them. >> all of the supermarkets and groceries that are members of our coalition say this tax is simply so high, it's going to have to be passed on. in additio

pamela osborne is live in west deptford this morning. us how these fish are fighting zeke ra. >> reporter: good morning. the fish are actually going to be the eating the larvae of the mosquitos. by the end of next week, 10,000 of them will be released in retention basins throughout the county. the centers for disease control and prevention has been tracking the mosquitos that can transmit the zika virus. based on their monitoring system, those mosquitos can be found all throughout new jersey, delaware and pennsylvania. health officials, though, say this does not mean that the mosquitos will cause disease. these mosquitos would have to bite someone who is already infected in order to spread the virus. i did some more checking around with the cdc. as of may 4th, there have been 472 reported cases of the zika virus in the u.s. all of those cases can be related back to travel. reporting live in west deptford, pamela osborne, nbc 10 news. >>> today in harrisburg, an aide to former pennsylvania governor ed rendell plans to plead guilty to fede

. >> nbc 10's pamela osborne is live in center city.hat's the medical community saying about this issue? >> reporter: you know, this is about a lot more than dollars and cents. it's about the potential lives that could be saved by a soda tax, believe it or not. the study conducted by harvard university found that the soda tax will save 700 lives and reduce health care costs by nearly $200 million over the next decade. still not everyone is in support of the tax. most recently, councilwoman submitted a container tax proposal that would add a tax on containers over seven ounces. excluded in that tax would be milk, alcohol and baby formula. the mayor's plan would add a 3 cent an ounce tax on sugary drinks. >> people who make this product, sugar-sweetened beverages and distribute it are very wealthy people who can afford to eat this. >> on the backs of my industry, similar. there's many other industries out there that had he have gotten some of us together, we might have come up with some ideas to spread the tax out amongst other industries

nbc 10's pamela osborne is live at independence hall for national travel and tourism week.ts like this are so important for philadelphia. explain why, pamela. >> good morning, tracy. it's because of the amount of money that comes into your local economy because of those visitors. we spoke to our friends over at visit philly. they tell us that last year, 39 million people came to the city of philadelphia. it's a huge number but not as big as this. $10 billion. that's how much money those visitors pumped into our economy. $28.5 million every single day. independence national historical park saw more than 4 million visitors which supported nearly 4,000 jobs. and this year, we're expected to see even more visitors than that. >> a lot of times like during the papal visit, people realize what a great city this is, they may never have been here before and decide to come back. so one great thing about philadelphia is that people come here and whether they know it or not, they fall in love with it. >> they're kicking off the tourism season. this is going to be a busy summer here. no

pamela osborne is live on scene. pamela, police say they found the victim in the parking lot. >> reporter: that's right. they say, according to witnesses, they were telling police the victim was in an altercation with at least one or two other men in the parking lot moments before the shots were fired. the victim was shot in the chest. police tell us he had two graze wounds to his head. he was transported to einstein where he was reported dead. all of this happening before 2:30 this morning. investigators say at least 11 shots were fired from two separate guns. we're told the 25-year-old victim had a gun, though police have not recovered it yet. when officers arrived, two people were still on the scene. a witness positively identified one of those people as having been involved in the fight with the victim. those two individuals were transported to whom side for questioning. police believe one of them may be the shooter. there's a police crime watcher camera in the area. they'll be looking at that as well because the

nbc 10's pamela osborne is live outside special victims unit in kensington.pamela, police say the girl's mother was salted as well. walk us through what happened. >> we're talking about two very disturbing crimes here, committed on that mother and her teenage daughter. before we tell you exactly what happened, do i want to let you know, we're telling this story in a way that will protect the identity of that young victim. at 12:30 this morning, police got a call about a sexual assault that took place at a home in frankford. when officers arrived, a teenage girl told them she had been raped by a family member. that wasn't all. when police went inside of the girl's home, they saw the girl's mother laying in a pool of blood. she had severe trauma to her face and her head. police say she was unable to talk and was semiunconscious when she was rushed to einstein hospital. she was so badly injured that medics thought she may have been shot. doctors determined her injuries were from severe blunt force trauma to her head. she's in critical condition. the teen aegage
