oscar winning actress angelina jolie is making a startling announcement this morning. in an op-ed piece in today's "new york times," jolie reveals she underwent a double mastectomy in order to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. in the piece titled "my medical choice" jolie says she opted for the procedure after learning she carries a gene which sharply increases the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. the actress said she began the three-month procedure in february after her doctor estimated she had an 87% chance of contracting breast cancer. once i knew that this was my reality, jolie writes, i decided to be pro-active and to minimize the risk as much as i could. it's an issue already deeply personal to jolie. her mother died in 2007 of ovarian cancer at the age of 56. jolie, who turns 38 next month, writes she now can tell her children they don't need to worry about losing her to breast cancer and she adds that she hopes her decision to go public about the procedure inspires other women to get tested. it is my hope that if they have a high risk, t
