the isn't the city of new orleans the police department, majority african-american. our police department looks like the city. but in the last five years everybody on that department has had to earn it back and community policing is the way you do it. you don't drive through, you stop and talk. you help if help is needed. when there's a police-involved shooting in new orleans after five years are working throughs discontent degree, mayor as soon as that happens, pmib shows up on the scene. federal monitor, independent police monitor shows up and all of the sudden a thorough and transparent investigation so that the public knows that what's happening is fair. now, the outcome isn't always predetermined and in some instances, right, the police officer did the wrong thing. in that instance, that officer gets indicted and/or convicted an the mayor's exactly right. when that's wrong, the police department, unions themselves, have to say listen, under those circumstances when the officer did the wrong thing we're not doing to stand there and try to justify that. on the other h

border that play a big role in the guns on our city streets. we would like to see the city of chicago become a statewide model so you can torg the tars -- stores where the disproportionate amount of the guns come from and the individuals. in one way the federal government can be helpful, they have entities, in a very coordinated, localides way of going after the few individuals that are creating a disproportionate amount of the violence and targeting them with state, federal and local resources in a concentrated way. >> i certainly agree the embeding of federal officers is helpful the we've done that in baltimore and we have that collaboration between all levels of the government and the prosecutors and it's been very help envelope trabbing down -- we had one seller of illegal guns that was coming in every weekend from i think it was -- outside of the state, somewhere in tennessee i think -- every weekend at least 20 guns. every weekend without fail and we were able to through that partnership to track that down. and this is one of the

there are still too many guns on the streets of our city or available in other places. we have some of the weakest gun safety regulations in the united states of america, from the common wealth of pennsylvania and they have blocked the city from taking further action. but, you know, those things are your things. people are engaged in crime and violence for a variety of reasons. there are some who actually don't want to be engaged in that life. in many instances have a previous criminal record or did not finish high school. the challenge there is how do we get more employers to take on our returning citizens and give them that second or possibly third chance? how do we make sure with proper funding and accountability that more of our young people are not only going to high school, graduating high school and then going on to atwo-year or four year college or university or career in technical education program? how do we get the federal program to reduce funding for job training and workforce development programs? people who are working don't have time to be engaged and inv

louis that it is not only the right thing to do for families that come into our city and to our nation, but it is the right thing to do for our future, as a city and as a region. we have established the mosaic project, a regional project that where we have philanthropic and corporate and civic and political communities coming together to make a statement that we want to be a welcoming committee, and we do a lot in educating the public and we talk to the press. the press helps us get our messages out, in a lot of different ways. wah -- so the work you're doing in getting out throughout the united states, talking to communities is very, very important, because knowledge really is important in this effort. there's a lot to know, and as i said, there's nothing but good to come out of a regional and a city effort to be a very welcoming community. we have a, an international institute that is there to he help -- it, to help refugees and immigrants into our city. new americans find jobs, to learn english, to get connected with health care. to learn a lot about what you need to know in the uni

they were doing whole movies, tv series, about how violent our city was. the attitude in our city politically was last person out turn off the lights. and against that backdrop, i ran for mayor. i brought people together, not over democratic and republican divisions, but if you wanna talk about divisions, try discussing public safety given our legacy of slavery and racism in america and how intertwined that is with law enforcement. but we, nonetheless, brought people together, did a lot more on drug treatment, did a lot more to roll back the open-air drug markets, and we put our city on a path for the biggest crime reduction of any major city in america over the next 10 years. but the search for the things that work and the things that don't did not stop just because we got the, started saving lives and getting the numbers moving in the right direction 'cause we never, you know sometimes people say, "you have any regrets?" yeah, my biggest regret is i couldn't have done more. i mean it was a very, very stubborn problem. and so as governor, we did, i was ab
