first mate, owen chase. 21 men. cabin boy was thomas nickerson and they departed and headed for the pacific. it was a normal whaling voyage, not a very successful one, as they made their way around cape horn, up the west coast of south america and they decided to venture out farther into the pacific than the essex had ever been before,to the off shore grounds. and they were, after a stop at the gulop goes, they were 3,000 miles from the coast of south america, when they sited a huge sperm whale. 85 feet long. this is a huge whale. if you know the huge jaw here at the whaling museum. that refutedly came from an 85-foot whale. just massive. particularly when you realize the ship was 85 feet long. one of the whale boats was damaged and so, first mate owen chase dragged that boaten the deck of the whale ship, essex, is repairing it, while the other two boats are pursuing whales. cabin boy, 15 years, was at the helm steering, when the huge 85-foot sperm whale appeared on their port side. they didn't think much of it beca

the owen chase house is still there.the nixon, the house thomas nixon was in when he was in the guesthouse, nantucket are's no longer hunted whales by this point they fished for tourists and thomas nicholson had a guesthouse that is on north water street and is part of the hardware harsh complex. there is the pollard house on center street. it's amazing. you go to the cemetery, there's all this, owen chases grave is there. i had a remarkable opportunity to take two of owen chases descendants, a sister and brother to his grave before the book came out. and they have his portrait >> it's here now. >> yes, it brought home to me when that this is a local story its local history. in one sense for me. one of the aims i had in heart of the sea was to take would i learned as local in my book about nantucket. to try to make it more universal. to really focus on this as an endurance situation. as what happens to people in the worst situations. i wanted to not make it just another whaling story. but something where if you grew up i

captain pollard, captain of essex is in the house basically next door, and in melville's copy of "owen chase account of the essex disaster, melville late in life would write in green crayonbecause his eyes are really giving him problems, sometime in the 1850s, went to the island of nantucket. met captain pollard, who by this time not only lost the essex, but his next command, the two brothers, the next year. he met captain pollard. to the islanders, a nobody. but to me, the most remarkable man i have ever met. what he saw in pollard, i think, was a role model for how he would conduct himself for the rest of his life. because with "moby-dick" he had gone through one of the great personal and professional disappointments he could experience. he would continue -- pollard by this time was a night watchman. it wasn't as if he refused to even think of the essex. every november 20th he would lock himself in his room and fast in memory of those who had died on the essex. he didn't pretend it never happened, but he led a productive life. melville would do the same. but it's poignant. he misses hawtho
