oxford house is in the report. clearly, you have over 2000 houses and over 43 states and the district of columbia, canada and australia. the report points out that you are the leading example of recovery supported houses. [cheering] there are a bunch of recovery housing in the environment oxford house is the leading example. it is in the surgeon general's report. it notes that oxford house is pure run, something, substance free residents of helps recovering individuals and requires all members to maintain abstinence and encourage but do not require participation in twelve-step mutual groups. all of this is in the report. you already know this. but here in the surgeon general's report. [cheering] you have external validation, not that you needed it but it is always nice. everyone likes a little props. everyone likes to be acknowledged from time to time. you know you are good but it's right on track nice to hear that you are good. at least, i think so. the surgeon general report noticed that a randomized controlled b

and he said can i study what happens in oxford house. i should sure, and they keep track how many came in and whether they were voted in or out, but fine. and this guy tracked down 1280 people and in those few houses in d.c. and maryland in the early days, from 1975 to 1987, 1280 people had lived in those houses. he interviewed them all and he came to us and he said 80% of the folks who moved into oxford house stayed clean and sober. and wit and john and i and others at the oxford house said, what are we doing wrong? we're losing 20%. explain-- explained to us, no, what we were doing was exceptional. most places would be happy if 20% stayed clean and sober. here was some system, some way, some scheme that ended up with 80% of the folks staying clean and sober. so give you a backdrop of oxford house in louisiana. we are not as large as washington north carolina. we have a total of 110 houses. we have 69 men's houses, 25 women's houses. , i manageular house the contract for the funds that we received for services and their dependent children, pregnant women who have chemical dependency history problems. we have a total of six facilities statewide. had the discussion with lauren and marty at the time to implement that into the containment of care in the state of louisiana. now have 16 women and children's homes. that equates to 809 beds. i can't even expand to you how carefits into continuum of in our state, especially since most states are going through constant budget restraints or reductions. i cannot impress upon you how important those bazaar. there are 509 men's beds. there's the breakdown again of the total women's beds and the women and children's beds. this is the data given to me prior to the conference, some of the oxford house data. residence -- house once you see the shocking numbers

so, that is what we are doing with the re-entry for oxford house. one thing i want to focus on is phone interviews. if your house doesn't do phone interviews it's very important for people coming out of prison to do a phone interview because they can't come into person for the interview. and then of course helping them et situated like dan said. it is so important to be -- to make people feel welcome and comfortable. i have had people call me before and say, nobody really talked to me when i got to oxford house, and that is an unacceptable thing. if you're living in an oxford house, it's your responsibility to make somebody feel welcome. if you are tired of doing that, it is time for you to move on. [applause] give people a chance. help them. i believe that is what we are here for. that is what we are on earth for, is to help each other get through the hard times. we are all going through a hard time because we are struggling to stay sober, trying to pay our child support, struggling to do all this stuff and we are trying to not kill ourselves in the

[applause] i've had the pleasure of meeting with people in recovery around the country it has been a great honor people don't know my name but they know the title drug czar and they are happy to share their story. they sit down across the country and i have heard about their journey and to topics come up all the time in conversation. one is related to recovery house and finding a safe place to live the other is stable employment and a good job. it is reassuring to know that fox ridge house has accountability for those who want to stop using and maintain recovery is the hope of this administration everybody wants to stop drug and alcohol use that they are welcome regardless of a recovery path if it includes medication. there is no one path to recovery and everybody is different it doesn't matter how was long as they get there. like give yourself the time at oxford house. i lived in oxford house for seven years. i know that's a really long time. but i know me. you know what i mean? and you know you. and you know that it's going to take more than three, six, nine, one year of recovery for you to change and stay sober for the rest of your life. i took that time for me. and it was important. you know, i made sure they was stable and that i didn't -- i wasn't moving in with somebody that i could make everything work for myself. that's one of the biggest things that we focus on in oxford house is, you know, being self supporting. that's not just for your oxford house. that's for you as an individual to be self supporting and self sustaining and not depend on the system to take care of you and having the food stamps. those things are there to help you as tools. and then, you know, i'm going to close with this. the other part of is giving back. and one of the biggest ways that i gave back -- before i started working for oxford house i did it for service work was opening houses. that is one of the mo

[laughter] dr. gitlow: when you buy the bottled water, are you concerned there is bpa in the plastic? yes, you are. you are concerned to such an extent about health and that you decide to buy something that you can get for free out of your tap, then are further concerned about whether there is something called bpa in the plastic. if you go to the grocery store, there are aisles full of products, supplements, you can take, ranging from willow bark to l-carnitine. all of which might be helpful, but sells tremendously well. we even passed laws that are a minority oflp people in the country in order to protect their health. what is one such law? a big one is the seatbelt law. we all put on our seatbelts because we have to and because we know that we don't want to go through windshield. the reason w

the next question, final question, what is oxford house doing. you can expand evidence-based intervention by working with trinity leaders and senior coalition prevention treatment and recovery programs and policies. use the surgeon general's report to document that position. you can use the surgeon general's report to inform your own members, your families, and the public and community leaders about the science behind your condition. it does not mean that you are brain damaged but it does mean that you have been exposed to substances that have affected your brain and you are recovering from. mobilize different segments of the community engaged with stakeholders and recovery, policymakers, law enforcement, healthcare, education, businesses, the faith community to encourage change. you are in a position to do that. 1200 people here and you are a strong army.
