she taught me how to promote and convince oxford university press. ay know who let that the book or have just lifted it up. it's a heavy book, but it's also about oxford. and so i wanted this book to be for university press. and finally i was able to secure that. in the 90s it was very important for me. at a certain point i had gotten a chunk of it done and i proposed it i heard from susan ferber, the best editor that anyone can have. she said you know, jeffrey, i'd have half the book done. were not going to publish two books. but we will publish one large book. i don't think he realized that that time what she was saying because it ended up being a very large book, but one i'm enormously grateful for oxford university press to put in the time and money to make this book what it is. the whole staff they are, nico particularly in angela mussina had promoted and supported me in this process. in the course of a book like this, taking many, many years to do come incurred many debts. my great friend come eat from a price who labored over the book with me a

we were invited to do an article for a book for oxford university press, being edited by friends of ours and they invited us to do the piece and by doing the piece we interviewed many, many women we knew around the world, friends well knew around the world, all of whom are feminist activist scholars, and out of those interviews came the article and then so much data left we started having a discussion and saying, we could do something more with all that we have left. and then we thought of the archives. >> it's also that we realize that what we really wanted, what we had a hunger for, and what we thought our students had a hunger for, was actually the stories of these amazing feminist radical knowledge producers and activists, so all of the seven women who we highlight in this book are actually people who have been part of many, many different social and political movements, but they are also people who have tributes in certain knowledges which have been part of the movements. so what we were looking for is not a broad range of people who are involved in feminist movement. we were lookin

and speaking of lady bird, she did a tremendous oral history with the johnson library that oxford university press which has a long and venerable history of publishing oral histories published that oral history. with some light touches of analysis along with it. because we have done every presidential administration's oral history starting with jimmy carter and even starting a little bit with gerald ford and a group oral history we did back in the late 70s as soon as he left office, ted kennedy came calling. and he said he would like the miller center to do his oral history. so i've just been finishing the touches of a manuscript for that for oxford. so to jeff's point about it certainly does take time and resources for these papers to come out. we haven't mentioned the security issues. and so all of these papers have to be run through security protocols to make sure that they're still kennedy document that's are not out yet for national security reasons. so it takes that time. it takes the processing time to do. and so how we view oral history in working with usually the top 100 to 150 members of
