the newest one we've talked about here is the auto fire near oxnard. you can see that there up in the corner. the biggest fire, again, is, of course, the palisades fire burning near malibu. that's in this area here now, up to 14% containment. it has scorched more than 23,000 acres. just a devastating fire. all right, let's move out to the other, other active wildfire in southern california, which is still on the cal fire's map is the hurst fire. and we'll show you the hurst fire burning. here's the eaton fire. forgive me. good start. let me start with the eaton fire. containment from that is up to 33% now, which is not bad. so they've had some improvement. more than 14,000 acres burned in the eaton fire. evacuations are still in effect, but today, more people were allowed to return home to see what was left. with any luck, their homes were still standing. again, the other active wildfire in southern california is on cal fire's map. still. now let's talk about the hurst fire. you see it burning right here? it's burned 800 acres, much smaller. it's near

so again, this one's in ventura county near oxnard. but it does look as they're starting to get a handle on some of those flames. but time you see something like this, i mean, over the last week now. yeah, yeah. i mean, obviously no idea of how this one started where it you can see dropping some there. thankfully, that means that the winds too strong for them to be able to do this. obviously. >> almost a week ago last tuesday night, those winds were too strong and fire crews could not get in the air so they could not fight the palisades or the even fire from the sky. but this one, it looks like they're able to get a better handle as he pans over. i think the fire was a little bit further to the right and they've been able to to start suppressing it. so we'll continue to check in on this throughout the night later this hour. and the 11 o'clock hour as well. tonight, 10's of thousands of people, though, are under evacuation orders because of fires down there in southern california. kron four's rob nesbitt has been talking with residents

areas around places like santa clarita, very difficult towards oxnard. that's exactly where that particularly dangerous situation has been called as we move into tomorrow. you can see it's not much improvement. when we look at the afternoon, same story of where we're at today, then things get better. this is the wind right now. i'm in a row you through today and just show you how gusty that area near ventura and western la county are. this is as we get into tomorrow morning. so still very difficult throughout the day. then we start to get into thursday. now we start to see a difference. that's thursday at 12:30pm. that will be a big difference that will allow firefighters to get their arms around these fires again. but today it's really all about just maintaining what they have. again, this is going to be until 6 o'clock on wednesday right now that we've got the red flag warnings up, bringing it back to the bay. of course, we're having a beautiful day, much calmer weather here. we are so very fortunate blue skies as we take a live look here at the golden

that includes oxnard, thousand oaks, santa clara, santa clarita, acton. this is an area where we have some of the higher elevations, the higher terrain, the canyons as well. and those santa ana winds come out of the northeast and they race down the mountains. and this is an area that we're watching for. some of the strongest winds today could see winds in excess of 40 to 50mph. so here's future weather. the winds are going to stay active all day today. so even by noon we're seeing those winds elevated. that continues in the overnight hours. and first thing tomorrow morning we're still underneath that red flag warning. but by tomorrow evening the winds really back off. and much lighter conditions prevail thursday and into friday. so some encouraging news there. back here at home it's all about the frost advisory this morning. we have clear skies chilly temperatures early on. it's bright, it's calm and it's mild this afternoon with temperatures upper 50s to the mid 60s. we will take a look at the seven-day forecast coming up in about eight minutes. >> thank

you can see now for fires one north of oxnard. of course we have the palisades fire, the one that is just south of santa clarita and then one that is in the hills right behind pasadena. these are all in very populated areas. and this red flag warning goes through 06:00pm on thursday. so not through today, but through tomorrow. now, let me show you what happens with these winds as we head into the evening. here's where i have some good news notice they start to ramp down. you're looking at about 9 o'clock tonight and that's the way things will and this evening and into the overnight even tomorrow morning. i do think that firefighters will have a much better run in a much better chance to getting some containment. here's the problem we get into tomorrow afternoon. you start to see some of this wind rolling again. now it is not as extreme as what they've been dealing with, but nonetheless, that will make firefighting difficult until we get to friday. now we're into friday morning. now we're going to see this wind event really start t

and your i goes to oxnard there about 38 miles per hour. and as i take you into the afternoon, you see those purples and those red starting to move towards the coast. riverside there at 31 miles per hour. this is this evening. and then we get into tomorrow, particularly in the early part of the day. that's what we're likely to see some of those higher winds that are happening. that's when that potentially dangerous situation, i think could be at its worst. and then this will be your tuesday afternoon. so obviously wind high wind warnings and wind advisories are up and you can see, particularly for los angeles and heading into ventura county. notice that it has expanded right a little bit to the north. now that is through 12:00pm on wednesday through 06:00pm on wednesdays. the wind advisory in parts of far southern california. but basically today is going to be a very difficult time for them. that area of concern is i mentioned ventura county and west la as we get into the overnight as well, still facing extremely critical fire weather condi

we know for people living in that riverbed area, the city of oxnard though tonight saying no homes are under evacuation orders or warnings. so that's important to note there. but again, as we turn to our chief meteorologist, bill martin, just an example of what possibly could come. it doesn't take much to turn a small fire into a big one. >> and this wasn't an existing fire. now we have the existing fires, the perimeters on these things, the containment on the big fires in la, you know, average 20%. so that means 80% of the fire lines are not contained or not completely where they want it to be. in other words, you could have a hot spot, a fire start. and that is the concern for tonight. we've got red flag warnings. tonight we've got wind advisories through wednesday. but again remember i. oakland hills a long time ago fire the night before. no wind. they put the fire out the next day. there's wind. the fire spreads and that's the oakland hills fire. well, that's what you've got here. you've got hundreds and hundreds of miles of containment. that is especially in the palisades that is

. >> crews worked all night on a new fire that started in ventura county, near oxnard around 7:00 last night. this is the auto fire. this area is in the pds red flag warning that we've been talking about as of this morning. forward progress of that fire has stopped. crews were able to keep the fire from spreading out of a local river bottom. our sister station in la had their helicopter over this fire last night. and here's their reporter describing it quickly became a five acre brush fire and has since doubled to more than 10 to 15 acres in the middle of the santa clara river, between the buenaventura golf course and the river ridge golf club. >> it quickly was driven by heavy fuel and heavy winds through here upwards of 30mph, at one point speeding westward towards victoria avenue. fire crews, after numerous water drops, were able to stop the forward progress of this fire, just about 1000ft short of victoria avenue, which had to be shut down but came really close at one point as it made the run towards the west, where there was a whole bunch of agriculture just beyond victoria avenue

i did pick up some winds out of oxnard at about 40 miles an hour. out by just north of malibu.hose winds will pick up later on tonight into tomorrow morning. this is the palisades. wind 15 mile an hour. wind gusts. still not a lot. but as we get into the midnight hours, you'll see here and into the overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, the winds really pick up. note the colors. this is tomorrow morning at 6 a.m, the colors representing where the wind fields are. and then watch it peaks. the winds peak at around lunchtime tomorrow. that is significant. that's malibu north into oxnard and a little bit into ventura as well with other winds in the area also. but the story will be that and that as the afternoon wears on tomorrow, the winds die down. finally, after day after day after day of extreme winds. but got to get through tonight and tomorrow around 1 or 2:00. and then the winds die down to pds. particularly dangerous situation issued again tonight. >> all right. thank you bill. well, firefighters are on high alert as those strong winds move into the los angeles area. ktvu

now expanded north of oxnard down towards el cajon, escondido. so that's near baja california.ing just means that the vegetation is extremely dry. humidity levels are anywhere between 5 to 15%. and with these strong winds, if we do see some flare ups, they will spread rapidly. so tomorrow's risk expands from oxnard down to riverside, temecula as well, and escondido, where we do have that critical risk even along the ocean side carlsbad, san diego, chula vista, that's really near the ocean. the humidity levels there are expected to drop to about 15% over the next three days. so this area of high pressure will come in tomorrow night into tuesday. it will develop into the great basin, and then we'll have these northeasterly winds, downsloping winds that will intensify and bring in some warmer air from the mountains because it will really compress. and we'll talk about 40 to 70 mile per hour winds monday night into tuesday and even wednesday. this is usually the rainy season in california, believe it or not. but what's happening is that we have a ridge over the west allowing all st

then there was another fire last night called the auto fire between ventura and oxnard. this has some higher containment numbers. it's at least 50 acres. gusts there 10 to 20. and this is a more of a marshy area. it's not super hilly. so that has helped firefighters starting to get on top of that. so as we take a look at the wind here tonight, it's 20 to about 35 for lower elevations, higher elevations getting up to about 50. 10 p.m. we stay with those gusty winds in the mountains into tomorrow morning, maybe up to that 60 70 mile per hour range. then tomorrow night into thursday. there you go. watch this. as that wind starts to get into the 5 to 15 mile per hour range. so tomorrow night into thursday this is all going to be out of here. raj we hope that happens. thank you jeff. let's talk about the money now. could federal aid for california end up being granted conditionally meaning strings could be attached? speaker of the house mike johnson thinks so. blaming these wildfires on what he says are issues with our local leadership. you've also heard us talk about our con

now we also have the auto fire to add into the mix which is over towards the oxnard ventura area. all of these locations are looking at those winds to pick up today. some of them could be 50 60 mile per hour gusts, even in some isolated spots as high as 70mph. at times. that is going to make it tremendously difficult for these firefighters to fight a lot of those fires, because you have not only the wind advisories, but the high wind warnings in effect. and some of these will continue through the early hours of wednesday. so it's not just today. this is likely to be a 36 plus hour event for these areas. the one thing we desperately need in the forecast is rain, and we just simply don't have it. now. one bit of good news, however though, is towards the end of the week and into the weekend, you'll notice the humidity levels 70% 7560. that is up tremendously from the 10 to 20% that we are at now, and a little bit of a shift of winds will also help these firefighters out. just kind of have to get through the next couple of days before we get to those better conditions. >> that is key.

two new fires did crop up today, one in riverside to the east, another in oxnard, both of them small, but a sign of just how vulnerable this area still is. right here on this corner in altadena. the terrible fact is, most of the houses have already burned. only a handful remain in sight. right now. the damage is done. los angeles county has set up a website for people to check on the state of their homes. all those red houses you see in the map, there are almost too many to count. there are homes and buildings that have sustained more than 50% damage. inspectors from cal fire are doing the damage assessment. this is video they shared on social media of a damage inspection team doing their work in neighborhoods across the fire zone. they're trying to assess with each structure exactly the the nature of the damage. we spent the day, though, with search and rescue teams looking for the remains of anyone who may have died. the death toll stands at 25, but the fear which l.a. county sheriff robert luna expressed on the program last night, is that more victims may still be discovered. here'

reporter: there, stu, well here is the latest on the auto fire burning near oxnard, california in ventura county. that fire is still 0% contained as of the last update but they were able to stop forward progress at 56 acres. it currently isn't threat earning buildings and it's burning through a dry riverbed. but firefighters are going to jump on any fire that lights today. that's because we're dealing with a particularly dangerous situation, 45 to 70-mile per hour winds. we've already had one wind gust of 72 miles per hour, but the good news is that there are a lot of firefighting resources on the ground here in southern border. 15,000 firefighting personnel from across the western states, even from canada and mexico, right here, ready to battle the blazes. now, where i'm standing right now this is the aftermath of the palisades fire in pacific palisades, and you know, we've been showing you the images of the devastation, so many homes burned to the ground. some of these images are absolutely remarkable. you see cars like this where metal melted and you see pools of aluminum and other met

oxnard at about 15 miles an hour. then some more reports for you. as you can see, some calm wind out toward pine crest site here. and then santa monica winds at about 15 beverly hills, gusting to about 15 miles an hour. so here's the forecast model. most of this past week we've been talking about a northeast wind. so that's the case for today. we will see the winds pick up into your wednesday. and kind of a wind shift that to easterly. more of an easterly wind. and with that the fire danger actually kind of propagates up the coast closer to a ventura county, closer to santa barbara as well. so here is a look at the most recent red flag fire warning coming up for you right now, until until 6:00 wednesday for all of these areas. so winds for the mountains could be gusting up above 50 miles an hour. gusts closer to general, around 35 to 40 to maybe 50 miles an hour. you've been hearing about the pds, a particularly dangerous situation. you can see it's kind of outlined in these areas. you'll notice it is not in place for the palisades fire zone. it is

over towards oxnard, which is actually ventura county. the winds are gusting to 33. and i put that in there because it is not just a los angeles county area. take a look at the red flag warning. it stretches from san diego through los angeles, over towards ventura, santa barbara, as well as san luis obispo. so this is going to go on until wednesday evening. relative humidity again going to remain low, but the winds expected to pick up even more so for tomorrow afternoon, when we could see gusts 60 to 70mph during the afternoon. i've been kind of watching the observations, and there have been just isolated areas that i'm seeing with wind gusts to 50mph or more. but the forecast here as we roll into tuesday. notice the shades of reds and even purples popping up there into the afternoon and then going into wednesday as well. even when the winds die down for just a little while, they're back up once again. wednesday perhaps. could be some of those stronger winds before that wind advisory. or i should say red flag warning expires at 6:00. also, keeping an eye on the forec

some strong winds out toward camarillo and oxnard, gusting to 35 to 45 miles an hour. some more sites. not too bad. you could see lax showing you a southerly wind at about nine miles per hour. here is their wind forecast. it is still breezy to windy this afternoon, but we will scale back on those wind speeds later on tonight and even into your thursday. so we're going to increase the moisture levels and that will be good change for the fire crews battling those fires down to our south. it has been a dry weather stretch for us since the storm track does not want to pay us. a visit to last rainfall was friday, january 3rd. we are up to 12 days for today. so here's the satellite, the big view. you can see a storm track out here, but all of the energy is going up and over california. so no sign of rainfall for us. we'll have to keep an eye on maybe some gusty winds developing, especially maybe into early next week. it's still a lot to wait to iron out, but when a pattern sets up like that, we could see episodes of those offshore winds. of course, increasing the fire danger
