p.j. crowley.ell joining me now is white house reporter for the hill amie parnes and emily heil, columnist for "the washington post." amie i want to start with you. this is the big story today, north korea with more new threats against the u.s., and its threats against the south. they haven't seemed to receive. but give us a read on how concerned the administration is about this, especially when we consider the young new leader kim jong-un and the fact that he is not well known in international waters. >> sure. well, thomas, the white house is basically saying that any further threats by north korea would only lead to further he isolation. they're putting all blame on north korea right now, even though the u.s. and south korea have been practicing exercises over there. they're saying that the escalation is all squarely because of north korea. but i think they are a little bit concerned. >> it certainly is posturing from a lot of different angles here. emily i want to play for everybody what defense

p.j. crowley is with us. now professor at george washington university in d.c. any difference as far as practically speaking? >> i agree with what jonathan said. by itself, we've heard it before but the trajectory is unnerving because as you get escalation after escalation, the potential for miscalculation goes up. not only do you have an unproven leader on the north side, you have a new president on the south side. used had exchanges the fire the last couple years, the sinking of the south korean ship and fire on on the young pong island. he was determined to return fire if north korea did it again and the park administration coming in, so you have a low-level event that escalates. >> shepard: you mentioned the thinking of the south korean ship. there was a cooling off period but there's been a promise sent that should anything like that happen again, the retaliation will be swift. which leads, again to your concern if what if one person on the border at the dmz makes a mistakes. tensions are high. >> sure but it has to be something larger that engages public o

p.j. crowley, former u.s. assistant secretary of state for public affairs. i want to get to afghanistan in a moment. let's talk about syria for just a moment. the "ap" is reporting the united states is training syrian rebels in jordan. this comes after a "new york times" report the cia is more deeply involved in arms shipments and intelligence than we've thought. do you have a sense of what our level of involvement really is in this civil war? >> well, the government has been careful neither to confirm nor deny whether intelligence assets are doing that kind of training. although it did -- the united states did announce it is providing funding to help not only vet the various groups that are getting arms, primarily from, you know, neighbors of syria, the united states providing nonlethal assistance, but trying to make the, you know, the rebel movement as effective on the ground as possible while staying on one side of the line that the united states has drawn that in itself will not provide arms to these rebels. >> with, so i just have one question. with talk

p.j. crowley. always good to see you. the president just announced he will be working with congress to provide roughly $200 million in humanitarian aid to jordan. but privately, what else do you think the jordanians will be asking of this administration in regard to syria? i think on both sides, the real question is the perspective from the president from them as to what is the probability or potential that what's happening inside of syria emanates beyond its borders. obviously jordan has shouldered a significant burden with more than 400,000 refugees that have flowed into jordan. there is a similar burden experienced in lebanon and turkey. and the conflict has crept ever more closely to the syrian/israeli border with fighting now in the golan heights. i think the most valuable peace of this in terms of syria is just the president getting the perspective from the neighborhood. how urgent is this and whether there is in fact something more that the international community or particularly the united states can do. so the pr

p.j. crowley, former assistant secretary of state for public affairs and a fellow at the george washingtonc diplomacy and global communication. that's one long title, p.j. >> it is alex. >> a good day to both of you. martin, the president's first official trip to israel, stage it for me. do you call it a success? >> i do. i would call it a success, given the rather limited expectations. nobody was expecting that there was going to be a breakthrough in the peace process or a breakthrough in any of the other discussions they were having regarding iran or syria, mainly. but the success, i think, came from he really did succeed in changing the hearts and minds of a large number of israelis in particular when he spoke to those students in jerusalem. he really seemed to be speaking from his heart when he said in the middle east in the beginning of the speech, when he was really speaking so sincerely, it seemed at least, about his respect for the jewish people, his support for their -- for the israelis and their secure existence in a very difficult region. i think that really did resonate. of cou

p.j. crowley he tells r t the president's hands are tied. having worked for president obama i thought that president obama had the right policy approach when he came into office in two thousand and nine to close guantanamo within one year the united states civilian justice system has for decades been able to handle terrorism cases we've had a number of them in recent months and years however as the president had signed an executive order pledging he had to close guantanamo congress has prevented him from doing that there was a secondary effort through the state department for those. detainees who were judged to belong to no longer pose a threat or have been mistakenly brought to judge quantum in the first place to transport those back to home countries third countries and that has simply had tried that over time made the challenge smaller unfortunately the state department has been forced because of funding issues to close that office down so it really is the isis congress that has basically frozen you know the situation in place the preside

p.j. crowley.to see you. >> hi, shep. >> shepard: i don't know if i ever remember things being as difficult and the situation as tenuous as it is across the region. how important a moment was this for the president and did he rise to it? >> well, certainly the president's trip comes off of an israely election where israeli and palestinian negotiations were not a major factor. so particularly in his conversation with college students, bringing this back into the sphere, reminding people that notwithstanding the urgency of syria and the incredible complexity of the situation with iran, that this has to be part of the agenda for the prime minister and the president, but realistically you heard positions where president abass continued to insist there has to be a settle. moratorium before negotiations begin. this is their position for the last two or three years, not a position that a weaker israeli government is going to be able to accomplish. >> shepard: on iran, the president said yes there's not a
