in march of 1942, the hornet left for the pacific. they were going to be carrying jimmy doolittle's for the first launch a raid on tokyo japan and of course waldron went with them , with his stiffest batres and senior pilots. he left behind half of his squadron to receive the new avengers and hope as soon as they are live to -- arrived in would be put on transport and sent to hawaii to pearl harbor to catch up to the hornet before another major battle went to japanese. in early may of 1942, american codebreakers led by joe roche byrd defeat could be used the japanese planned invasion of midway, 1200 miles west of hawaii. it was designed to draw the last american forces, the carriers out of pearl harbor where they would find this overwhelming force of japanese to destroy them. and eliminate their presence and they reached the point in the pacific. ed model commanding the pacific fleet put all his confidence in those codebreakers to setting up an ambush on the japanese fleet. the japanese fleet was the largest force of ships ever assemb

so darwin thought of the whole pacific as an area of subsidence. now, the place that he had the best opportunity to actually climb around on a coral reef himself was in the keeling islands in the indian ocean and this is a quite beautiful drawing he did of the keeling islands and in his view, the coral reefs were formed by -- were built on a gently subsiding ocean floor. and that they might be thousands of feet thick. this was not something that could be tested at the time because people couldn't get very far below the surface of the water. although, they dropped lead plum bobs toward 1,000 feet so very, very deep for the period. darwin noted how quickly coral reefs fall off. how they dropped down very dramatically and you can see that in his coral -- in his coral -- his drawing of the keeling islands. the charting of keeling islands was done by this voyage and keeling islands were not recharted until the 1940s during world war ii. so they did very fine work. here's the basic theory -- darwin's basic coral reef theory. land subsiding and coral reef

the chance of severe weather and unseasonably warm temperatures in the pacific northwest. let's start off with the rough weather first. in the plains you'll see a frontal boundary extending to oklahoma city and just to the east of amarillo. we could see storms in st. louis, memphis, even little rock, arkansas, before all is said and done. of course, dallas, if you're flying into dallas, you may have delays. the other part of the big story has to do with the warm temperatures we've been dealing with, especially parts of the pacific northwest. in fact, look at this map we have for you here, showing you the issue with the jet stream. a little bit of a trough in the eastern half of the country and certainly in parts of the central plains and west. we have the big ridge, with high temperatures well above normal, 89 in seattle, 94 in salt lake city. 89 in atlanta. boston and new york checking in with highs in the low to 80s. i'm reynolds wolf. >>> getting a pool may have sounded like a good idea, but what do you do when you don't want it anymore? >> it is strong. very strong. yo
