this was the sight of the first american pacific of the war in the pacific. a lot of people ask where is this place? certainly if you asked any of the 10,000 marines who landed here in the late summer of 1942 they wouldn't have had any idea. but this was the farthest expansion of the japanese army. from here they planned to invade new guinea cut off supplies to australia and new zealand and inn veiled australia. but on august 7, 1972 they were going to take away the airfield and the island and in so doing answer the question of an anonymous marine private. his question was where the hell is guadal canal. on august 7th they landed without a casualty. japanese were taken completely by surprise. by the 8th of august they got what they were after the field. henderson field was 3600 feet long but only partially completed. there were about 2,000 japanese on the island when the navy began the pre-invasion bomb barredment. to a man they fled inland. they have left behind an enormous amount of supplies, construction equipment, weapons, food and saki. it was a good thi

we are about to start a conversation on a fascinating new topic, jews on the pacific coast. reinventing community on america's edge. joining us are two of the three authors. ava k ahn, author on many books on the topic and professor ellen ellenizeen burg. welcome. >> thank you. >> this is a wonderful book seems a tremendous edition to the way we frame jews on the pacific coast what was your intent in writing this book? >> sure. well, the field of american jewish history has been so traditionally framed by the east coast. particularly new york. one of the things we wanted to do with this book was to reorient that in some way and demonstrate the importance of the communities here and also demonstrate they are not just some sort of shadow of the eastern experience but a unique experience here really distinctive in some ways of what happened back east. >> what is distinctive about the jewish immigration experience to the pacific coast? >> well, it is people who wanted to take a chance. they tended to be step migrants, therefore they stopped in the eastern u.s., or midwest, proba

. >> the asia-pacific island cultural center receives help from the census but our commission. john mean today to talk about in off festival is the executive director. welcome. i understand this is the 13th annual festival. can you tell me the name? >> the name is a celebratory name. we also celebrate what we call the asian-pacific islanders as well, in terms of culture, experience, and multidisciplinary arts. >> the festival is actually very wide-ranging. you have 16 venues, and how many different performing arts centers? >> we have over 85 artists participating, 16 venues, 21 events. there are over 15 groups that are performing. >> there recently kicked off at the beginning of may and will continue through june 13? correct? >> that is correct. unlike in the past years, we have had to expand the festival because there has been so much activity and so many people want to be part of the celebration. we're very honored and pleased to have the festival going all the way into june. >> we're kind of coming in on one of the groups. >> francis is one of the pioneers of the asian ameri

we're under the influence of the north pacific high. what's happening in these climate simulations is those subtropical highs, more or less, are strengthening, on the other hand if you live in seattle you might be more encouraged because it looks like there's a tendency for latitudes to get wetter and that wet goes further north. next one. well, here we have in this case just one scenario and he's imposed the warming on a hydraulic model and this is the remain of the watershed, this is the sierra nevada and this is the infraction of april first and period surrounding 2060 and that around 2090, and you can see we're eroding the lower elevations of snow and by the time we reach 2090 in this case warmed by 2 degrees celsius, we lose 50 percent of the california snow pact. it's not in the snow. next one. that changes the hydro graph as you heard this morning. so this is october through september the aggravateded sierra run off. more in the winter period, and less in the spring and summer by a bit. this is a recent flood. not a big one. but
