we have so many stories to tell in asia pacific heritage month. when i was in the classroom, stories of his struggle and how he empowers young people to turn their lives around are so inspiring. we need to count. to keep telling those stories. we need to keep telling those stores. my daughter is now the same age as a number of other kids of our families. part of asia pacific heritage month is making sure she knows about them and a dancing justice in the asian-american communities. i first met mayor lee when he was a hard-working attorney at the asian law caucus. they just celebrated their 40th anniversary with the founders and other organizations throughout the country. key part of the justice movement. my daughter needs to know about the stories and be proud of who she is. she needs to have a pan-asian consciousness about her. i am so proud to be here with you leaders and my colleagues as well. thank you, everyone. we are here to celebrate asian pacific american heritage month. this kicks off the celebrations we will be having an the recognitions we will be giving. i apologize first. i was at a budget meeting. sadly, that is coming before as quickly. i had to spend some time there. i guess it is true. asians are probably good at math. [laughter] i am just joking. there are many other things we are good at, as you can see from all the people who are here today. we have education leaders, our president of the board who runs a small business, many different levels of expertise. that is what i want to speak about. when we think about asian- americans, we fall into stereotypes. we have individuals in our community who are poor and rich, who have been here for a long time, who are new immigrants. each one of us has a strong place in creating the fabric of our country. i want to emphasize the fact that every individual contributes to our shared history in the united states and san francisco, whether you are a little kid going to school part of a school project in a

we gather tonight in celebration of asian pacific heritage month.take a moment to reflect upon our past to understand the heroic struggles, obstacles, hardships that so many people, including this evening's tremendous honoree, the honorable norma neta had to overcome. this is a very special place. norm gave me the good fortune of putting my feet to the marble in the halls of congress, apapa, let me thank you, we'll give the opportunity for 20 interns this summer to place their feet on the halls of this city in sacramento, perhaps in washington, d.c. so that they can partake in the greatest democracy that has ever resided on this planet. now, this is also of tremendous significance as congressman alluded to, this is the home where people left when they came to this country and they headed to mining gold in california, when they had to leave the fields of california from farming and that applies not to just the chinese, but to the filipinos and others. they set foot in san francisco. and generation upon generation of residents of san francisco had to

so we would like to welcome you to the third annual statewide celebration in recognition of asian pacificander american heritage month. and this event is hosted by mayor ed lee. i'll tell you a little bit more about apapa first. it's a nonprofit and nonpartisan. since 2001, our focus has been on educating the public about public policy and fostering future leaders from our minority communities to serve at federal, state, and local levels. the mission of asian pacific islander american public affairs association known as apapa, easier to say, is to empower asian and pacific islander americans in civic and public affairs through education, active participation, and leadership development to accomplish this objective, apapa provides the following core services to the community. >> apapa provides civic engagement, youth leadership development and community service. the theme of tonight's event is a is celebration of the achievements and accomplishments of asian americans in the state of california and our nation. >> and without further adieu, i would like to introduce our host for this evenin

[laughter] i am happy to be here to celebrate asian pacific american month. as a people, we have enriched american society as have many other ethnic groups. in advancing education, the fema -- theme makes a lot of sense. in the asian-american community education is very important to us. it is the system that will equalize all of us in terms of advancing life. we need to start today in terms of celebrate our heritage. the school district is rich with examples of how we have honored and recognized individuals in the asian-american community in terms of their contributions. we have several schools named after asian-americans. that includes the elementary school, the alternative school, the school the arts. thank you. it is an example of how the school district plays a role not only to educate our kids with textbooks but also as a model to say, look, these people were very important. they made a difference in the life of san franciscans and americans. thank you very much. they named the schools for them. thank you very much. >> on the asia pacific region. >> on the asia pacific region. well, i think we've made it clear for the past several months that this department has a robust asia pacific strategy that is contained in the new u.s. tra teenagic guidance. the secretary was he was last in asia previewed much of that strategy. he talked about the united states being a pacific nation and a pacific power. he reiterated that several times in several locations in the region and on the continent. the asla pacific region is vital to u.s. national security interest and will be so in the future. and we are absolutely turning toward the asia pacific as a place where our strategic interests are increasingly of importance, our partnerships with partners in the region are critical. and we're going to continue to invest in those relationships. we have a very sound asia pacific proef. i would take issue with any suggestion that we have not put appropriate emphasis on the asia pacific region as important to the united states military and our future. >> do tomorrow's nuclear talks

we all know whether you agree with the president or not that the pivot is to the pacific, asia pacific, we've heard many, many sessions in here by many of our military leaders about the concern about the pacific and the rising strength in the pacific. now, what that represents for someone like myself who comes from hawaii, is the fact that you know that our pacific command is housed on the hawaiian islands, we have no, quote, natural resources in terms of fossil fuels, and that is why the development of alternative energy in a very broad definition of alternative energy is not only critical for the stability of the military in the pacific, but also for the united states as well. think about it. we're talking about the housing of our troops in the pacific, that's also a consideration. it's not just the ships or the jets, it's also where they live. it's the bases. how do we provide the electricity and so forth that's the power that's needed to run those types of facilities. that's alternative energy. hawaii has geothermal. how do you transmit geothermal from one part of the state to the

pacific fleet at pearl harbor. the hawaiian site of one of the principal naval bases of the u.s. >> i took my bugle and ran up to the bridge that's where my battle station was. it couldn't have been a couple minutes before 8:00. i didn't even sound colors. i'm really not sure. then the captain came up and this was a little after a couple minutes after 8:00, and he come up and looked and said my god we're at war. the next thing i remember there was a tremendous explosion on the tennessee your number two gun turret. there was shrapnel all over the place and i looked around and the captain was laying on the deck. he had most of his -- he was almost tore in half. we made him as comfortable as he could. and this was just a little bit about eight or nine minutes after 8:00 and we stood up and all of a sudden i saw the arizona explode. and i tell you i never was so scared in my whole life. you could feel the tremendous heat and the concussion blew us back to the pilot house. came back out and the cap pain was laying there
