this is also the location of the great pacific garbage patch.0 million square kilometers of garbage that's kind of centralized itself over the north and central pacific ocean. this is amazing, this huge conglomerate of debris and things like plastic bottles, even chemical waste found in this large garbage patch over the central pacific. and now, with this cyclonic flow over the central pacific that we have found some of the degrees flying east ward from the tsunami. in fact, the national atmospheric and oceanic administration made these models. this is basically the debris fields moving gradually eastward. it's just that we continue to see the debris piling up on the west coast of the united states or the west coast of all of north america. what the biologists found was the debris left over from the tsunami was about 5 million tons, about 70% of that or 3.5 million tons expected to sink over time. but what we've seen is this continuous washup of things, like abandoned see vessels, houses, even i've heard reports of a harley davidson washing asho

that triggered the tsunami that moved across the pacific.ents, the california current, the north equitorial current. that forms one larger current known as a guier. this is a combination of weather patterns and winter patterns as well. this is also known as the great pacific garbage patch. you may have heard of that. that large 20 million square kilometer area of plastic bottles, sludge, all kinds of debris that have just continued to circulate across the north pacific. there are some models off of the tsunami debris coming off the coast of japan moving them over over the following year since the tsunami. it's just amazing what they found. 5 million tons of debris washed into the pacific on that march 11th, 2011, event. they estimated about 70% of that actually will sink to the ocean floor overtime but of course we are now starting to see and continue to see debris that have reached all the way on the west coast of the united states. i'm going to leave you with this particular image because what we're actually noticing here is even floating

and japan and other countries in the asia pacific region. that will be a focus. but also, we'll be looking across the whole relationship, how we cooperate in the asia pacific region, whether the people between our countries and importantly the first lady was able to visit japan recently had a very good visit with mrs. abe, where they discussed, among other things, our shared commitment to the education of women and girls. and the things that the u.s. and japan can do together, but also in support of international girls education, our peace corps is the united states is cooperating with their japanese counterpart and it's something the first lady will continue to work on with mrs. abe. so it's going to be an important and substantial visit from the prime minister, but there are many other important elements that we'll be hearing from now that i think will resonate with the japanese american public and is really a testimony to how much we value this friendship and partnership. >> good morning, ladies and gentlemen, we are awaiting spring so the culinary side of our

the only thing that's not really from the pacific is the coral. it had to be man-made. >> coral is actually a living animal. it looks like rock. and it's related to jellyfish, and it actually forms a limestone cavity around itself so it's basically like the outer edge of the coral is living and building on the limestone skeletons of its ancestors. and the coral in this exhibit, however, is re-created. real coral has to have intense sunlight, so it's also very fragile. >> you can actually step into the reef at the underwater viewing level. and there's a lot to view. there's more than 700 fascinating marine animals. one of the crowd favorites is calypso, the giant sea turtle. when she was found, she had a badly hurt fin. after some delicate surgery, it was decided that calypso wouldn't be able to survive in the ocean, so blacktip reef became her new home. the exhibit also has plenty of sharks, particularly the kind it's named for -- the blacktip reef shark, what's called an apex predator. so, what is an apex predator? >> an apex predator is a top pr

i want to point out come june we will be releasing pacific pond turtles into mountain lake. we have been working with the presidio trust and the agencies that regulate that space and the pacific pond turtle will be reintroduced to a native site, again mountain lake, and that will be happening in june. there will be some big roll out with the presidio trust so an exciting day. let's go to the next slide. oh this is great. so don't just come to the zoo, explore the zoo. it's a great place to learn about migratory species each year and we do three or four bird walks with the master birder and he works with the -- thebon and you can learn about the san francisco zone down the coast. many of them actually stop and stay as they recognize this 100-acre park as a great place to set up shop. this is a really interesting bird. this is called a hooded orial and about the fourth year at the zoo, and the color on this bird is absolutely stunning, stunning. the picture does not do it justice. in fact we're going to have another bird walk on thursday april 23. just come and show up at 830

the united states serving as the asia pacific power has been critical. and as i said before we welcome china's peaceful rise. we think is good because china is a booming potential market believing it is good not only because it will allow china to potentially share burdens with us in helping countries that are not as far along develop. we think it is good hundreds of millions of chinese citizens have been able to rise from poverty at incredible speed. they could not have done that had it not been for a stable, trading system and world order, that is underwritten in large part by the work our alliances do. i think it is going to be important for us to continue to adapt to challenges. the same principles the alliance was founded on need to update about concerns on cyber threats, that we are nimble and responsive to potential conflicts arising because of maritime disputes. we have to do it in a way that brings in china and other countries into a common effort to maintain order and peace in the region. why seeking to strengthen military to military cooperati
