fires you can see here in the pacific palisades you have some areas still smoking still smoldering. palisades that are still burning. you look over here the places that have burned and you can see what used to be a chin up bar. a bench press overhear things like that. we wanted to show you some before and after pictures of the homes themselves. some of the coastal homes in the pacific palisades to give you an idea of what life was like here in los angeles just three days ago and what it looks like now the pacific palisades. there is a reason as you look at these images there is a reason that you have officials that you have the mayor that you have people saying this appears to be one of the most destructive, disasters in los angeles history. that is saying something. for a city that has undergone earthquakes and so on and so forth all kinds of disasters that is truly saying something. so we wanted to give you perspective, a little bit of context to know where we sit today and where we sat just a few days ago and how many lives have changed. remember that the numbers just kind of run

we're at the lower lyi level of pacific palisades right now. here at the entry point, you can see fire crews milling about right now, their trucks going from one location to the next. the house behind me has been on fire for quite a bit of time. i mean, we've just been in this one location for about an hour. it was completely destroyed when we got here, but the fire continues to go right now. but we have seen constant fire crews pass by this house and not treat it. and that's because they have other homes that they are focused on right now. homes that have not burned, that they are trying to prevent from being damaged, from being burned, to try to save more homes in this area. but we were up in the hills earlier today. and from neighborhood to neighborhood, you just see all the homes completely destroyed have been leveled to the ground. we were up in the hills where we saw one house that had been burning for over an hour. we saw actually cars in the garage. you could start to hear some of those explosions, a hissing sound, and you can just real

we take flight with cal fire up over the pacific coast highway, headed toward the pacific palisades. and the first images we see here, the coastline. the homes of malibu that once lined the ocean are gone. it's just stunning to look at this stretch along the pacific coast highway in malibu. you can see it, home after home completely gone. they are taking to us where they say there is a firefight right now from the air. they are now dropping water. but before we even get there, over this ridge, the pacific palisades, entire communities wiped away, homes burned to the ground. this is just a devastating view as we fly over pacific palisades. you can see down the row just how quickly these fires spread. cal fire deputy incident commander justin mccomb. when you look at the scope of the devastation here, what kind of winds were you dealing with in those first 24 hours? >> the winds we saw were 70, 80, 90 miles an hour along the pacific coast highway. and that was what the environment, the firefighters were dealing with. there was embers just flying across laterally. very difficult to even
