take a look at the waves in the pacifica. pretty daunting most of the time and looking pretty good as well. take a look at some v. o. we have, we have some video of the oceana high school. a few hours ago you will see a whole lot of police officers. there were dozens there all over san mateo county. from pacifica, brisbane over to hillsboro. and they were all there waiting for their orders if they needed to come down to the lower lying areas, the areas west of highway is and get on their loud speakers and tell people to get out. that order has not come in. evacuations are voluntary. called this morning, alerted some for clarification. here's his story. >> and they told me it was a warning only. i said should i be taking stuff out of my house? they said it's a warning. it's your decision. i'm thinking is this overparanoia here, you know. >> well, i guess law enforcement would tell you we're waiting for orders. if it's going to happen we may be in place right now. so they are prepared for emergency evacuations but none have bee

we have been told by pacifica police. you can see within the last 20 minutes there have been public work crews that have come by here to pull up caution tape. authorities just want to make sure that no one comes by here. no one uses the walkways because that is what people do. they walk their dogs they run they walk in the morning and the authorities want to make sure that access to all beaches and to the water is closed at this point. now i spoke to a few local residents who told me this morning they got up because they heard about the tsunami warning through facebook and twitter. in fact a group of onlookers this morning said they have to come out to this very pier so they can monitor waves waves. they wanted to see the waves that could be generated by a tsunami. we have been checking in with all of the authorities this morning. we will continue to have an update for you in another 30 minutes. reporting live jade hernandez. >>> our time now 6:34. many japanese americans in the bay area are keeping a close watch on the d

el granada, half moon bay, pacifica. upper 35 is really backed up all the way down to the bottom of the hill. you can see cars once they get to higher ground are pulling over to the side of the road. obviously it's safe there. but, you know, chp is on scene providing traffic control because of the connecticut con. we are seeing just a sea of -- because of the congestion. we are seeing a sea of cars. we can see lots of red on the maps so indicating slow speeds. 280 showing yellow so once you get out of 92 over to 280 along the peninsula, there are delays there, as well. so avoid the area if you can. from christin ayers's live shot, roberts road near crespie, that's very high up there but there is congestion through there. i have had some phone calls from neighbors and friends asking about highway 1. highway 1 is open but again extra busy. skyline has delays, as well. bart later on 7:00 to 9:00 there is a possibility they may shut down trains because of the tsunami warning. right now, though, all trains are on time so far

christin ayers is along the coast in pacifica.people to get out, i guess. >> reporter: people are combing the area to make sure no one in the pacifica area is on the beach. we are the only one out here at the beach. authorities say they are expecting at some point if truly we start to see these two to three-foot swells that the water will sweep onshore here and we are getting a route to get out in case that does happen. as you said, there are some evacuation orders going on right now. authorities are saying, if you live east of highway 1, you're going to want to evacuate west of highway 1. anyone in the linda mar area also needs to evacuate east of adobe drive and if you are in gra nada, evacuate to the east of coronado street. fairlawn view elementary school and pescadero high school and other areas are now shelters. if you have nowhere to go, get away from the coastal areas and to one of the evacuation shelters. we are going to keep an eye on this. people are certainly evacuated at this time and receive 911 calls and -- or autom

pacifica and two schools in marin. it's because of concerns of the tsunami. >> what you're saying about crescent city will depend on what bart says. >> we want to tell you about some of the beach scenes. again, the waves, the water level is starting to rise slightly. in half moon bay, the water level was up about eight inches. i mentioned crescent city seeing water levels going up to approximately seven feet. they have been activated warning sirens. you may recall, it was in 1964 there was a toeses to that hit cress -- tsunami that hit crescent city. it killed 11 people. so they are aware of the danger. as we're looking at some of the waves coming in, this is low tide. if there is any major tsunami, if there is an impact from this tsunami, it would probably be the equivalent of a high tide. >>> a lot of the coastal areas can get waves 40, 50 feet high. they crest and break. the waves are measured. that's in the -- not the case for the tsunami. it measures from normal sea level. it continues to surge up and move inland.

they started evacuations in linda mar and pacifica. there is a sand berm at the front of the valley. beyond that on the other side it looks like a lot of those homes built below sea level so should that tsunami come on larger than expected and breach that berm, there is a possibility -- a possibility that those homes could be flooded. that's unknown right now. so we are waiting to see what happens in hawaii so we get a better idea of what kind of tsunami we are dealing with. so to be safe, move to higher ground especially along the west coast. we are seeing what looks like a pretty good tsunami moving in a little later on. keep in mind this is not your typical wave. this is going to come on at 2 feet. doesn't sound like a lot but there's a lot of energy behind that and what you get is you get a piling up of the waves as they begin to approach the coastline. watching out from washington to point conception to the bay area as the waves move on shore. once it moves out of the deep water it gets affected by the coastal area. a lot of the t

highway 1 in pacifica is affected. the areas and schools in there have been shut down especially in the linda mar area. cabrillo, ortega, all those schools are closed. you will see delays on highway 1. folks are staging near roberts road, up in the higher parts of crespie in the back of the valley so you will see some extra busy conditions for folks through that area. evacuations in santa cruz is causing problems for highway 17 right at the summit. it's slower heavier than normal just approaching the summit and we heard from kcbs our radio partner that there is a lot of cars pulled over at the summit. it's filling up in the area for folks trying to get out of the area. give yourself some extra time. it is friday light overall but there are some delays at the bay bridge toll plaza. we'll continue to watch this all morning long. back to you. >> thank you. we'll let gianna catch her breath. she has been busy this morning. >>> we have been talking about possible bart closures. simon perez is at the lake merritt station. si

we are in pacifica very close to where your caller mentioned she lived on the hill in pacifica. i think we may be very close to where she is. i wanted to show you what we are seeing out here this morning. we are talking with the folks who live up in these hills here. they seem to be the ones who are staying. we see them walking their dogs coming down to keep an eye on the water, but the folks who live down low, there's a tsunami sign that i took a picture of. i'll try to get that in. a tsunami sign for the neighborhood down below saying that basically this has the potential to be a tsunami zone. we saw those folks packing up this morning throwing food and water and their dogs in the car trying to get out. they had watched the coverage in japan and they just really didn't want to take any chances. we are seeing a lot of foam, what the caller was talking about, just white water rolling into the beach here. and when we drove by, it is a lot like what she said, you just don't see anyone over there. when you see people, they seem to be heading east. obviously, away from the water. th

reporting live in pacifica, kron 4 news. >>pam: rob joins us live from santa cruz with an update now that's also where officials want people to stay away from the shorelines. >>rob: take a look at this, i'm standing on the name boat launch an you could see the water surging in a little bit. were still some activity, but to give you an idea of how high the water came up and came back down. you could see the white spot on the pavement. we'll see this line of debris. with each incoming surge, this was the high water mark. as we look at here in the water, you could still see some activity of here. right now the water appears very placid, but you wait here for about 10 minutes or so and will start moving in one direction or the other. 50 minutes ago it was visibly moving inland. we were distracted for a few minutes and then when we looked back it was going back out again. let's go to video and see the more dramatic surge earlier today about a couple hundred yards east of here underneath the murray street bridge. the surge came in

we're in pacifica with more. >> reporter: got some crazy weather. we're here at pacifica near the pier. it started to rain heavily a couple minutes ago. there's a high surf advisefully effect right now until 9:00 tonight. we're expecting waves anywhere from 14 to 17 feet, and people are being warned to stay away from the ocean's edge because they could be washed into the ocean by a rogue wave. now let's look and see what the weather system has done the rest of the bay area today. >> this is pea-sized heal falling in santa cruz this morning. this is the racket it makes hitting the roof and deck there was justify hail for children to play in and build a small mountain. in oakland, heavy rains caused a small slide that closed one lane of park boulevard it only caused a smowl traffic delay in mill valley, sandbags are being used to keep water out of businesses. while the russian river is nowhere near flood stage, its brown color shows the amount of silt come due to the heavy rain. there's a high wind advisory from 9:00 p.m. until 8:00 tomorrow morning.

she is in her 60s and wearing a blue and white sweatshirt. >> in pacifica they didn't take any chances because of the tsunami warning. as ktvu's reporter mike mibach tells us that a resident says she has seen the city do something in the 32 years since she has lived there. >> reporter: moments after the tsunami set in beaches were closed and front decks and beaches were empty. >> this is the first time i can remember a tsunami warning. >> reporter: the parking lot became a stage i area for a number of law enforcement agencies while down below inside the school gym the red cross moved in pulling out blankets and cots. people who voluntarily left their homes signed in her. >> we have been in pacifica since 1938 and this is the first time they have closed a school that i know of. >> reporter: they received the call at 2 a.m. >> i was actually still sleeping thinking they called the wrong number or something. my sister woke me up and said the schools are closed. i think they delayed it maybe a couple of hours rather than just cancel it all together. >> reporter: classrooms and playgrounds

cells you will be wet as it moves in along the peninsula and south san francisco toward daly city, pacifica and burlingame. and so we are going to see this type pattern throughout the day today. so you will see on and off scattered light showers outside and then some occasional sunny breaks a little bit of both worlds around the bay area. light showers on tap as you have the jet stream still plunging across the bay area so yeah, going to keep things unsettled so if you are heading out this morning you want to bring that umbrella and the sunglasses, too. clouds, a few scattered light showers temperatures not all that bad mainly in the 40s and 50s. by the afternoon rather mild. 50s and 60s, partly cloudy skies. a little more sunshine toward the afternoon, a slight chance of a few more showers.

the surf came crashing over that seawall in pacifica. the pacifica pier which is typically open until 4:00 in the morning, did not open at all today due to the surf advisory. the most dangerous conditions are expected tomorrow evening. >>> it's been a difficult few days in santa cruz. the cleanup is almost complete. >> marianne favro is live in san if a cruise with a progress report of how that fear is doing. how are we doing out there? >> reporter: the harbor is still closed, you can see big chunks of debris from the docks that were swept out of the water today and put on to this ramp. one of the problems is, that there are still boats under water here, so it makes it unsafe to navigate the harbor. this port district boat is headed from the harbor to the scrap heap. when the tsunami tore through here last friday, 13 boats sank. this boat pulled up many of them, and now only two remain under water. right now, a boat from noaa is using sonar to make sure there's no debris that would be a hazard to boats nav gating the harbor. >> the harbo

don knapp is in pacifica where despite the warnings most people decided not to evacuate. don. >> reporter: dana, i would say that after watching tsunami disasters around the world for the past decade the reality of a tsunami hitting the california coast did come home to a lot of people along the coastal areas and when the warnings came they did leave. prompted by tsunami warnings residents of coastal areas around half moon bay headed for higher ground and parked. this is the intersection of highways 92 and 35 around 6:00 a.m. or 6:30 a.m. this morning. but this high school scientist teacher stayed at coast level and watched what he said was the most remarkable thing he has ever seen on the beach. >> we saw the water from the harbor getting pulled but because the forces were so strong and powerful they were picking up that soot and sediment and carrying it outward with it. >> my roommate he just ran, woke everyone up. screamed. robin got really scared and he was just like -- let's all go, forget everything. >> reporter: these pacifica residents got early morning warning ca
