beachgoers are warned to be aware of sneaker waves and large problems in pacifica.boulevard, a second sink hold has open up. >> it has. i know why, we are keeping a safe distance. the ocean is pounding the pacifica shore. we are facing high tide if -- in a minute. we see a sinkhole on beach boulevard they patched it up of the it is safe. it is this area that is so fragile. they have closed off a few blocks of beach boulevard. this new one is 25' long, 4' deep. they shut down a few blocks of the street. it appears to be a delicate situation. a few blocks down the road is another sinkhole opening inlast in. it took a bit of the sidewalk out. the good news is official say the seawall below the surface is fine. the el nino driven storms are betting up pacifica and an farm building on esplanade was evacuated because of the crumbling hillside. the city declared a "state of emergency," and is trying to get federal and state money to help make repairs. >> the conditions could be right but maverick surf condition test will not happen until next week at the earliest today thr

alex savage is in pacifica right now.you talked to the coast guard a while ago about the tragedy, alex. >> reporter: good morning, the coast guard gave us and update here. they say according to witnesses, the husband and wife were walking along the pacifica pier yesterday afternoon when suddenly both of them stumbled and somehow fell over the side rail of the pier and down into the water, then the strong surf pulled them both out to sea. the scene played out about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. the woman was able to swim back to shore on her own and survived, but her husband could not make it out. the coast guard had to use a helicopter to reach him and they did so. he was about 100 yards offshore when they pulled him out. he was rushed to the hospital but he died. he's been identified as 60-year- old larry moore from pacifica. the coast guard, we talked with them this morning and they say his death really should be a reminder act how dangerous it is along the coast. >> we want to stress to the public how dangerous it is, espe

>> reporter: well, we are just south of the pacifica pier, as you said.okesman tells us that this elderly couple, a man and woman were swept off the pier and ended up about 1,000 feet south of the pier because of the riptides, which carried them south. you can see, i think, dean smith. i think that's about 1,000 feet south and that's where the coast guard found them. the first 911 call came in just after 2:00 this afternoon. the coast guard responded quickly. they were looking for an elderly couple, swept into the water by waves. beth grossman witnessed what happened. >> they were holding on to each other. the guy went in after her when a wave took her out. and she was swept out there. >> reporter: the woman was able to get back to shore. >> he got close to getting out, like about three times, but the waves just pushed him back in. >> reporter: that's when the coast guard found him. >> the coast guard lowered one of their rescue swimmers into the ocean and was able to grab the second victim, lift them out by air and bring them onto shore. >> reporter: bot

. >>> we want to get back to our top story, a fire in pacifica. firefighters have been battling this house fire since 2:30 this afternoon. you can see it's fully engulfed. we're live at the scene. what can you tell us? what's the situation now? >> reporter: crews are still here. they're still putting water on this fire. 11 engines responded to this call. neighbors say lot of smoke and flames were coming out of the house before firefighters arrived the house is surrounded by businesses. larry at all-cars automotive and exhaust took this video. you can see flames coming out of the house and hear popping noises. propane tanks may have exploded in the garage. neighbors worried about the fire spreading. >> you always worry about the sparks that come off and the little fires that stay lit. >> reporter: crews managed to keep the fire contained, no other structures were affected. now the house is perched on the edge of a crumbling bluff. the city of pacifica said that house was red tagged recently because it might tumble down that cliff. so no one should

. >> today, live near the pacifica pier where it all happened. bob. >> reporter: if it weren't for a surfer who happened to be wa walking by on the beach south of the pacifica pier a woman might not have survived as well. yesterday afternoon she was in her bathing suit according to a witness wading in ankle deep water by the pier when a wave snuck up and pulled her out to sea. her husband jumped in and tried to save her. in spite of his wife telling him to stay put he did so anyway. he was able to grab ahold of her for a short time before a rip current pulled them apart and swept him further out to the ocean. a surfer named trevor griffith happened to be checking on the ocean when he spotted a woman in the water and not appearing to be in distress initially until she got pulled into an area the waves became more violent. that's when he heard her cry for help, jump in, risking his own life to try to save her. >> i ran in there and got hold of her. we both tumbled in shore breaks for a minute like that. got sucked back out. tumbled in again. when w
