pacifica, you're not seeing any rain right now. but more still to come all during the morning commute. and again in the south bay, seeing a void from sunnyvale through cupertino. seeing plenty of rain showers right now around alviso and alum rock and throughout the eastern foothills of the south bay. you see all the rain is fueling in from the pacific ocean going towards the high sierra. let's take a look at some of our stats. we usually about an inch and three-quarters of rain for the month of october in santa rosa. as of monday morning, we will see close to 3 inches of rain so we are averaging 200 to 300% above average for the month of october. this is our live weather camera looking at the very wet pavement. golden gate bridge where currently temperatures are balmy. it's muggy as you step on out. you have to remember this first system here has a lot of subtropical influence so it's a bit muggy and humid side and will remain that way throughout the day. the winds have not materialized. so that's that bright note with this current

kpix 5's anne makovec is live in pacifica. anne. >> reporter: yeah. we haven't really seen any of those things yet. but we know it is acomin'! the ocean has been churning here behind me as everybody along the coastline gets ready for a big storm to come. as another round of rain hits the bay area, wave after wave crashes into the pacifica pier. >> there's always going to be concerns with any storm that comes our way. >> reporter: but the pacifica public works department has been preparing for months shoring up its coastline after a state of emergency last winter. the cliffs were eroding. and part of the seawall at beach boulevard gave way. >> this storm here, we are concerned about the amount of water, short period of time. >> reporter: so they have been cleaning the streets and gutters to make sure that water can drain freely and the city is warning wave watchers to not turn their backs to the ocean. >> it's beautiful. yeah. really nice. >> reporter: mary and roy are vacationing in pacifica from new york. and while they are enjoying the untamed ocean

bob redell in pacifica. we begin with pete suratos in mill valley. it's been coming down on and off in the north bay for a few hours now. >> reporter: yes, good morning scott. it's been on and off at this parking and ride. this is video from earlier this morning in windsor. with these conditions you want to make sure you drive very slow. at least be cautious on the roads. we spoke to chp. here is the message they want to get to drivers heading out this morning. >> we saw that a few weeks ago, beginning of october, where we have decent rainfall in the north bay, and the chp here was going from call to call all day long. we could see it firsthand, people weren't slowing down, not following at a safe enough distance. when you get the first rains of the season, you have to back it off. that's when the most dangerous time is. >> chp doesn't plan on adding more personnel as a result of this storm, but they will be visible. so it's important to slow down when you're driving in that morning commute this morning. live in mill valley, pete suratos for "today i

she is in pacifica. how's it going, maria? >> reporter: good morning. no rain here just yet but the wind is really picking up. we are expecting 14 to 16-foot waves along the coast and you can see here in pacifica, the waves are powerful but not as high. this is just the beginning of what's to come. a few months ago el nino battered the coastline here. we saw the seawall fail and some cliff erosion city leaders even declared a state of emergency and demolished an entire apartment building as it teetered on the cliffside so today we are expecting that high surf that residents really fear here. we are hoping for the best. officials warning you to stay away from the water. when there is high surf, this area here can be really crowded by the pier as people watch the surf. they say to watch out for the rip currents and high surf advisory. maria medina, kpix 5. >>> let's check in with roqui for a look at our morning commute. hey there. >> hey, michelle. yeah. we were pretty quiet all morning but we have a traffic alert in sausalito. but first let me update you

maria medina is out in pacifica tracking the waves.igh surf advisory as well as coastal flood advisory. right, maria? >> reporter: as you can see behind meet waves not so high here just yet like we have seen in the past here in pacifica but really residents here high surf and it really puts them on edge because as you remember it was just a few months ago earlier this year that el nino really battered the coastline here in pacifica. we saw huge gaping hole in the seawall as it failed with the surf really battering the coastline. and we saw some cliff erosion, as well. city leaders even declared a state of emergency and rushed to demolish and apartment building that was threatening to go over the cliffside. today we are expecting high surf as you said, 14 to 16 feet waves along the coast and larger swells late saturday into sunday. >> now that winter is kind of coming along, it can get pretty heavy out there and get pretty dangerous so, um, i mean, people should avoid the water if they don't know what they're doing whereas in the summer

pete suratos joins us live from pacifica this morning. you had a chance to speak with the city about storm trucks here and given everything that's happened last winter, what is being done differently? >> reporter: good morning, sam. i spoke with the public works department here in pacifica. they tell me they'll continue to monitor the coastal bluffs. you see the waves. it's pretty standard right now. i tell you, when the storm picks up, the waves can ghit 15 feet and jump over the seawall. >> it's pretty when you are looking at it. if it takes you by surprise, it's pretty startling, you know. >> reporter: very valuable warning for folks if you are walking along the pier or promenade. no doubt about that. last winter with the el niÑo storms we saw the homes evacuated due to concerns of coastal erosion on the cliffs. the city had to make repairs to different parts of the popular promenade. specifically, there was a seawall severely damaged. they'll monitor the bluffs and the seawalls and storm drains in the next few days. the city is remind

"today in the bay's" rick boone live at cal fire headquarters in morgan hill with an update for us. good morning, rick. >> reporter: good morning. you know, there's no rain here at this point at this hour. of course, we're hearing the latest from our meteorologist. cal fire is on standby this morning mainly because the homes they saved during the santa cruz mountain fires, those homes could be an alert for mudslides. as you said, here is the cal fire sign. we swing the camera around, we've got i guess about eight garages, those are fire trucks behind there. that's very important. if that does become an issue that they have to go in the mountains again to be there for the folks t to make sure the homes don't fall down the mountains, that's when the trucks will go into action. if it becomes a downpour, we'll try to save as many as they can. cal fire surveyed about 20 homes in an area

now let's head to pacifica. >> pete suratos joining us live there. people there are worried about beach erosion. >> reporter: of course that's always a concern for folks when the rain hits. right now we're on the pacifica pier, the water will jump over the seawall. the waves are fairly normal. but when it's strong it will hit the bottom of that walkway over there. as i mentioned, when it rains -- >> the rain coming, a lot more of this stuff will start breaking away like it always does. >> reporter: the homes on esplanade drive evacuated and red tagged. residents could feel the water shaking their whole apartment. then you had another nearby apartment complex so close to the edge of the cliff that its owners decided to tear it down. there have been repairs to different parts of the popular promenade damaged during the el nino storms last winter. there were seawall issues. just a couple weeks ago, the city council here in pacifica voted unanimously to move forward on 12 more repair projects that will cost upwards of more than $3 million. >> look for th

there's always that concern when the rain comes down in pacifica. compared to yesterday when we were here, you're feeling a little drizzle. i want to show you here at the pier, you can see the waves. it's fairly normal, but a bit stronger than what we saw yesterday. whenever there's this wet rain, there's concern by residents and the city doing its part to make sure things are safe. there you have it. that's the rain coming down. we spoke with a bar and restaurant owner who has seen his parking lot flooded due to this rain. repairs by the city including a revamped drainage system to help avoid standing water and seawalls have made things a bit easier. there's also this addition. >> we put in the newbridge over here with the army corps of engineers coming out, revamped everything. >> reporter: of course last winter with the el nino storms, we'll talk about those homes on esplanade drive that were evacuated and red-tagged due to safety concerns. a couple weeks ago, the city voted unanimously to move forward on about 12 projects to make sure people are

we're here at the pacifica pier. the waves behind me can get pretty high depending on the strength of the storm. but another issue, of course, the coastal erosion. i want to show you a video last winter when you had the el nino forms. the homes on esplanade drive had to be evacuated and red tags. the owners of another nearby apartment complex decided to tear down their complex as well. there's going to be repairs to different parts of the promenade that are were damaged last year. a couple weeks ago the city council approving for 12 more repair projects that will cost the city upwards of more than $3 million. the waves coming in are fairly normal. if they do get high enough, they could jump over the seawall and do some damage. we expect the city to monitor this as the storm rolls in. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >>> also be sure to download our nbc bay area app. we'll send push notifications on any major traffic delays or problems associated with the storm. >>> all new this morning, authorities are investigat
