we're live from padre island, texas, what are you seeing there and what's coming your way?ght. the wind you can tell is still a big concern for us out here. let me show you the surf behind me. it is a washing machine on high rinse cycle. waves are consistent since we got here on tuesday. yesterday was really rough. today we have more people out and about. i also want to point out the dark clouds off in the distance. you will notice with some of those dark clouds there are some rainshowers coming down. some of those are heavy. last night we only got about an inch of rain on padre island but it was coming down hard and fast and winds were howling as they are howling now. we have surf concerns today, rip currents, large waves. people still being asked to stay off the beaches. you can see why when you see how quick the waves are coming in. we can still see the chance for a few isolated showers, perhaps water spouts off the dark clouds off in the distance. i know you are thinking why are you wearing a rain poncho when it's not raining? off in the distance the clouds may produce

from padre island along the coastline of texas.storm alberto made landfall near mexico this morning. just turned into a tropical storm yesterday and the impacts have been tremendous. think about this. we're still seeing heavy surf here and a wind feel. rain intermittent on the coastline. three people have lost their life in mexico. here up in the united states yesterday was fairly intense at least in this part of the texas coastline. look at some of the video at about 7:00 central yesterday had some of the strongest bands came in and we just got walloped with sideways rain and some of those winds up to 50 mile-per-hour gusts up to ten inches of rain and storm surge moving into corpus christi bay and padre. not just to the southern end of texas, all the way to galveston and the bend in southwest louisiana. to think of about this, mexico, 400 to 500 miles to the south of where i'm standing and about 1,000 miles from houston and galveston and the force of strength of this. ist is not over yet. we'll go through this the rest of the day

strong winds and heavy rain from alberto's outer edge already reaching padre island, texas, expected to last well into tomorrow. ginger zee with the timing of the storm and the heat and where it gets worse by late week across multiple states in the east. but first, abc's melissa adan leading us off in corpus christi, texas, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, tropical storm alberto lashing the texas coast. the first named storm of the season pushing up to four feet of powerful storm surge over the sea wall and into coastal communities along the gulf of mexico. a waterspout spotted just offshore near galveston. alberto slamming into the texas gulf coast with these rough waves, heavy rain, and that storm surge sinking several boats at this corpus christi marina. the bow of one boat and sail of another, all that's left above the water. waterfront homes left battered. and beach towns like surfside, texas, under water. this driver stranded in flooded streets forced to abandon her car. but police were able to safely help the young women get to higher ground. >> it's definitely worse than i expe

padre island, texas, it's blowing pretty good out there. >> tell you what, it comes and goes. take a look. the rain is coming in diagonally. we have had bouts of rain come through with gusty winds 40 to 50 miles-per-hour. 18 to 24 hours will be rough out here. not only here but up and down the entire texas coast. then you look at the sets behind me. surf is rough. all the wave energy out there since yesterday. rip currents, the danger is high. the surf is just churning. we call it the washing machine, if you will. the beaches, no one out here. we have had a couple of people walking along. we have a sea wall. a walkway where people are walking this morning, a few locals and their dogs. mostly that's it. a lot of the people who come here on vacation said you know what? we'll head on back home. they did that yesterday. a lot of people coming in from san antonio decided to come back in. with the winds whipping up along the ocean the friction is causing wave energy causing local flooding close to the beaches as well as beach erosion. then we talk about the amount of rain coming dow

to south padre island, brownsville as well, we'll continue the see flooding rain, also some coastal flooding and strong winds as well. alberto right now still a tropical storm with winds of about 40 miles per hour, no big updates with the 2:00 update from the national hurricane center. the rain bands extend so far north, the storm's impact do extend quite a bit away from the storm's center. it's important not to just focus on the storm's track. take a look at these rainfall totals. very heavy here just south of san antonio, brownsville, isolated amounts of up to 12 inches. our flood watch is in effect from galveston down to brownsville. with 4 million impacted. we're dealing with the extreme heat as well. so a lot going on here as we head into the next couple days and that heat is going to stick around. >> thank you all. >>> congress is considering a landmark new bill that aims to fight pornographic images that show real faces with fake bodies created by artificial intelligence. >> a bipartisan group of senators led by senator ted cruz, called take it down. >> it comes as deep fake porn prod

one example of what that storm surge has done to some pockets of corpus christi and also this padre islandight here. the thing is about all of this yesterday as we look at all of the video as alberto was out in the gulf wavering a very disorganized system trying to make its way into mexico with the impacts here significant with storm surge 2-4 feet sideways rain that came up to 1d unfortunately three people we are told have lost their life in mexico. no fatalities to speak up in the united states but there are areas like in galveston island near houston a couple completely submerged by the storm surge that came in periods 16-foot waves by the gulf what we were going through and just pelting rain. it now it yesterday the toughest bands came in and we can see the experience we were caught live in them as the sideways rain came in like bbs. unfortunately right now there are over 50 counties still in emergency declarations plus flood warnings are in play in this area even though the sun is out but these wins still persist. at one point over a 15-mile-an-hour wind gusts. the problem is, jacqui,

and as it makes landfall in mexico, it is still well away from areas like south padre island. but you can see the outer rain bands moving into areas like houston. they're expecting up to an inch of rainfall, but it will definitely be much higher in parts of mexico as that storm weakens once again. this is the first one of the atlantic hurricane season. you can see all of the other names on the list as we continue through the season. this is expected to be a very busy hurricane season, so we'll continue to monitor as we're getting out the door this morning. we're seeing a lot of clouds and we're also going to eventually see things clearing up. but overall, a really nice day ahead with temperatures in the tri-valley in the upper 70s for this afternoon, we'll take a look ahead to some hotter temperatures coming up. mike has been checking out the lowest gas prices around the bay area. we see some movement and we'll take it right in the right direction, which is just a bit lower, a few cents lower on my route to free to the freeway this morning i saw a couple of signs change and to
