shawn yancy, it looked like it was going to storm but we avoided severe weather, let's get to sue palka and see if we can expect anything overnight >> i think the severe threat is over but we may still have a couple of showers and an isolated nonsevere thunderstorm. what happened we had a lot of energy to the north and south but right around the dc area, there was bit's an atmospheric lid that capped these showers and storms from getting strong. we didn't have to deal with that, and tonight what's left is pretty light stuff. we have one more moderate downpour. kind of a healthy shower, storm, had a little lightening with it pushed into charles county, and they all have been moving so fast these storms were moving from southwest to northeast at about 50 miles an hour earlier. so look how fast that is going to go. and you can see one trailing behind waldorf. the rest of us a couple of light shower, as i put everything in motion, all activity ahead of a strong front that still hasn't crossed us yet. that front will crossover night and that's why we may have a couple more showers later. i'l

sue palka is here with more. so much drama with this super cell storm and the up usual phenomena was this. did you see some pictures that looked like this or the sky filled with what we call ma mattis clouds. i've only seen them a few times here myself and they are a sign of severe storm a the look of the pictures that people sent in, it seemed like a lot of people from montgomery county were looking south toward this storm and seeing the me mattis clouds which are caused by pockets of cold air singing down, a very tesh length sign in the sky. this one from paul mack gone l seeing the same type of cloud cover in gaithersburg. notice the color, too, because this was occurring as the sun lot of back lighting from the sunsetting causing the clouds to look golden and a little bit green here's another one. we got this one from tas dick in d.c. here's the storm that produced it all as i put it in motion, the lightning with this was incredible. at one point i saw lightning strikes of about 3,000 in 30 minutes. so it cam
