now, also, you mentioned that we are in the palm beach area. we are at the supervisor of elections office for palm beach county, and if you look over to my side, they have set up here for that hand recount. in anticipation of that of all the volunteers coming in here to palm beach. they also missed the deadline for the machine recount, so what does that mean? well, they were tasked with putting all the ballots through the machines again to check their numbers against the original numbers that they put in on saturday. well, the machines here are quite old, and they gave them a lot of problems. they overheated. they broke down. they were not able to make that deadline, as you mentioned, which meant that by law they had to submit their results from saturday, so those first unofficial rounds of results. now we also learned that hillsboro county had to do the same thing because they had a power outage there, two power outages there actually, and they simply didn't trust the numbers, so it ended up being two counties put in for their original results

palm beach county is an area where they did very well on election night.where many of the votes they were hoping that could potentially flip this race could be held. the fact they may not be able to get all those votes in time for the deadline could be a big blow to their chances in terms of overcoming either one of the candidates in the governor or u.s. senate race. fred, we should also point out this could perhaps open the door to a new round of lawsuits on behalf of the democrats to allow for that deadline to be extended. that would require a judge to be involved, and that could open the door to other counties being involved as well. but this is something we need to keep a close eye on because palm beach county saying that they will not be able to have that count done by thursday could have a very big impact on this overall recount. fred? >> so ryan, is there a reason? in five days, they cannot do the recount, but the numbers that they did tabulate, that took place in less than five days, did it not, after election day on tuesday? >> reporter: right. gr

point out the situation in palm beach county is unique.ach county operate voting procedures differently. that's their right under florida law. the machines are not exactly the same way as they are in miami did a or hillsboro. we're told in palm beach county in order for them to do recount they need to run the tabulations three different times for the statewide different recounts. that's one of the reasons they don't think they can get it done in time. what we're being told is if they get one of these races done, they will certify those results. send them to the secretary of state and that will be part of the recount. if any of those other results are not done in time, if they don't get it done by thursday, it will revert back to the original count on election day. that's very important. when the count was finished on saturday. that could be bad news for democrats because palm beeach county was one of their strongholds. fp the if there was an opportunity to pick up votes, palm beach county would be place where they would expect to see that
