to the east is palm springs. if you can see this black line in this direction, this notes containment which is effectively the first step in gaining control around this fire. you may recall hearing yesterday that this fire was only on 25% contained. in essence, this line was up to here. but you can see clearly how much progress has been made overnight. this black line wrapping clearly almost around the entire fire line. the red notating here where the work still needs to be done. as you can see, there has been significant progress here. and firefighters attribute most of that to the rain. intense yet instrumental in the firefight. a sudden and steady storm moves in. a helpful hand from the heavens. >> it provided much more assistance in slowing down the fire, keeping it in check. >> reporter: it comes as firefighters need it most. more than 27,000 acres scorched by the so-called mountain fire since sirs spark monday in the area of mt. center near idyllwild, where more than 4,000 residents remained under evacuatio

the blaze is now two mimes away from palm springs. teresa garcia is in one town where everyone was told to get out. >> reporter: closed signs and empty streets show the impact of the mandatory evacuations in effect for the small town of idylwild. >> it's very somber. >> reporter: mary is one of the few remaining holdouts. neither sheriff's deputies nor the pleas from her friends can get her to leave. >> i think the people who call me scare me more than being here. >> reporter: the fire has consumed thousands of acres and destroyed at least a half dozen homes. hotshot crews are using chain saws and rakes to clear out brush and build fire breaks. the afternoons are one of the most dangerous times for firefighters with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, which can help spread the fire more rapidly. the biggest challenge for crews is this terrain. it is steeped, it is rugged, making it difficult to build a containment line around the fire, and the timber out here are so incredibly dry, making for a lot of volatile fuel. >> it is

and up north is the palm springs area. nobody's been evacuated there, but the fire is only two miles away there. the smoke cloud is thick there. you can see it. and then, where we are, you can see the smoke cloud really well. and this is coming up just over idyllwild. take a look at some video from yesterday. again, as i said in our fifth day now, started on monday, on private land, the cause was human, but we don't know if it was accidental or if it was done on purpose. we know it started on private land, but it's gone on to tribal land, federal land. we have a unified command out here with riverside, san bernardino counties, and a dozen other local small city firefighters. as i said before, nearly 3,300. that's 400 new just added yesterday. so the threat today is real as ever. yesterday, we spoke to someone from palo alto in palm springs vacationing. of course, got a surprise with that smoke cloud. >> anxious at first, because we don't know the area so well. we didn't know whether to come down or to stay up that way. >>
