i am pam cook.now is 5:30. >> we want to give you the very very latest on that disaster on the peninsula. at this hour the search goes on for more victims of that devastating fire and explosion in san briewp 0. at least three people are dead, dozens more are hurt. dozens of homes have been destroyed. that devastating blast and just look at these pictures rocked the san bruno neighborhood about 6:15 last night. now news chopper 2 was on the scene within minutes bringing these dramatic pictures that say it all. early reports indicate it may have been caused by a gas station explosion or a comerl jet crash but it wasn't until hours later it was determined that explosion was set off by a massive break in a gas main. now the first pictures from the ground showed this, the shocking impact of the explosion. just look. a fireball shooting hundreds of feet into the air. a home neighborhood went up into flames. witnesses talked about the horrifying scene that they will never forget. >> it was just a huge expl

pam cook is in our newsroom now. hey, pam, did you find the name pam cook on that list? >> no. don't tell anyone. but there are some further down the list. number 1, once again, microsoft founder bill gates is listed as the wealthiest man in america for the 17th year in a row. at $54 billion. investor warren buffet takes second place with $45 billion. the bay area's larry ellis of oracle is on the list. also, larry page and sergei brin. and for the first time, facebook founder, mark zuckerberg, soared ahead of apple's steve jobs. now, the 35th wealthiest person in america. zuckerberg is also tied with the youngest on the list. steve jobs, by the way, came in at number 42, with $4.6 billion. back to zuckerberg. he plans to use some of his wealth for a good cause. the facebook founder is expected to announce tomorrow that he is donating $100 million to schools in newark, new jersey. he is expected to make the announcement on the oprah winfrey show. zuckerberg will also fund an education foundation with his private stock in facebook. there are reports that he owns more than a quar

ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with more on what the president said. so what did you think pam? >> reporter: pretty interesting. in a television interview this morning the president didn't say exactly how much longer the school year should be but he did say that u.s. constitutions attend classes on average about a month less than children in most other advanced countries. the president also says money alone can't solve the problems schools. the president called on teacher unions to be part of the problems in schools. he says unions have often been resistant to change and try to protect their members. the president also says that the message to unions is that they can't defend a status quo in which a third of students are dropping out. and president obama all is said teachers who are identified as under performing should be given the chance and the training to improve. and if, after that, they are still not serving students well, he says they should be removed from the classroom. reporting live in the newsroom, i'm pam cook, let's go back over to dave. >> okay pam, thank you. >>>

i am pam cook.ime now is 6:30. >> they will ask a supreme court judge to block this man's execution at 12:01 wednesday. this would be california's first execution in five years, kraig debro is at san quinton right now with an update an this really closely watched case. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, dave, we are now less than two days away from the first execution in the state in five years, if the state sanctioned killing isn't halted by a district court judge, but an appeals court, the aclu says it is ready. they say they will av a news conference and a vigil on this very street leading up to the eastern entrance to the prison. the condemned killer is alfred -- albert greenwood brown, he is scheduled to be executed at 12 a.m. wednesday. he was sentenced to death in 1982 for the rape and murder of a fenh 15-year-old riverside girl. according to e the district attorney he pulled her into an orange grove and strangled her with her own shoe laces and over the next days and weeks
