ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what ford will focus on at this new location. pam? >> it's pretty exciting. ford says opening a research lab near stanford will give it access to independent programs in the silicon valley and give the employees the freedom to experiment. about a year ago, they decided they needed a bigger presence in the silicon valley. they call this a natural extension into one of most innovative communities in the world. ford will work on ways to better integrate phones and other personal devices in their car. it will also work on safety systems including an alert for drivers when they are approaching another car. ford says about 15 feet will work at the new job, at least initially. some of them will be recruited. others will be brought out from the deerborne headquarters to work for a while. they will work with southern california's design studio and ford's offices at microsoft. gm and bmw already have similar offices in sinly -- silicon valley. research lab is expected to open in the next few months. reporting live from the newsroom, i'm pam coo

. >> and i am pam cook, time now is 6:30. there is news an arsonnest may have struck again and just hours ago there was another suspicious fire. fire crews are scrambling to keep up there, good morning allie. >> reporter: that's right, arson investigators are looking into 20 grass fires and this package we are sending right next to you is one of 20 and the most recent fire happened just five hours ago and it happened in the area of the rush creek open space reserve which is six miles away from the neighborhood of redwood boulevard and south novato. that fire started 1:30 this morning and firefighters had to hike through hilly terrain to get to this. just hours ago it was still smoldering but not threatening any homes and that's why firefighters decided to put a line around the fire and let it burn itself out. the chief would not say whether it was connected to the 20 or so grass fires over the weekend. most of them happened in a very residential area near south novato road. investigators believe all of them were deliberately

. >> good morning, i am pam cook, time now 6:30. >> topping our news, a real close call for an east bay police officer, a search is on for a driver who fired several shots at close range at an undercover cop in san leandro. alex savage has the details. >> reporter: this gunman opened fire on an undercover police officer from just six feet away and amazingly enough that officer was not hit. the gunman led police on a chase and the shooting happened on aloha drive in san leandro. police say it was an undercover narcotics officer who started following the suspicious car. he pulled up right next to the officer and the driver fired several shots into the unmarked police car. the officer was not hit and we are told he is grateful he survived this attack. >> he obviously had a lot of adrenaline flowing so now i think everything is setting in on him and he is doing great. >> after the shooting, the gunman sped off leading police on that high-speed chase on surface streets and he was last seen on 580 near the upper change with children. san leandro police are looking for a blue acura sedan but t

pam cook is here to tell you how you can test yourself against other talent from around the world.ood morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. it's not an interview, it's an contest called the hacker cup. for the third year in a row, facebook is calling for hackers, programmers from around the world to solve top coding challenges in a creative and correct manner. registration is open now. the contest begins next week, january 20th, and it starts with wrong line elimination. last year, 11,000 plus people from around the world competed. the top 25 are flown to facebook headquarters to continue the contest and they get to meet with company engineers. the winner gets $5,000. now they don't know in any former competitors now work for facebook but it's certainly a way to get noticed. last year a 26-year-old from russia was declared the world champ. >> all right, pam. an earthquake rattled northeastern japan today, a 5.8 quake centered about 75 miles southeast of the fukashima daiichi nuclear four plant. that is the same nuclear plant damaged in last year's major quake and tsunami. right

but in this case as pam cook tells us, it's not your typical homeowner. right, pam?> reporter: that's right, the homeowner is definitely not typical. but what is typical about life on the bay is tides and water coming back in in reclaim land. this is a live picture right now of the marina in san leandro, where about 40 people live off the boats. those are the homeowners we're talking about. the problem is mother nature is slowly taking back the area as tides rush layers of thick mud under those boats. it's estimated that the boat owners have about two to three years before they have to move. and san leandro can't afford to dredge the marina to allow them to stay. >> i think the city of san leandro was paying the bill, and the city gets hit the hardest. so the city does not want to spend the millions of dollars to keep the area dredged for such little revenue. >> the city is facing losing its star attraction, the marina. we have people from all over, i've been all over the bay, various marinas, and to be honest with you, this is a beautiful marina. >> a lot of people

and as pam cook reports, may have been going on for the last 12 years. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. this is really an incredible story that is still developing at city college in san francisco. want that take you out there live this morning where the college's data security monitoring service has detected a problem that could be widespread and a very long running one. the san francisco chronicle reports that the problem with was first detected at cloud call, the computer lab on campus, thought to be contained there. the lab was immediately shut down. but it now appears the viruses have been infiltrating the college's electronic system since 1999. the paper says personal banking information and other information has been stolen from tens of thousands of students, faculty, and administrators for years. the school's chief technology officer says it looks like the data was sent to sites in russia, china, and at least 8 other countries, including iran. that technology chief apparently met with college trustees last night. we under the college
