pam cook is in the newsroom with another issue. this one is pitting locals against tourists. >> yes. there are so many beautiful spots in san francisco that truly attract people from around the world. but that can be a problem for people who live in the city. this time, the debate is over lombard street. it's known as the crookedest street in the world even though technically crooked hest is not -- crookedest is not a word. the transportation agency will vote on a program to close the crooked part of lombard street on weekends between june 21st and july 13th and on the 4th of july. only people living there would be able to get through with a car. now, they say it can take an hour and a half to get home because of all of the people who want to drive down their street. now, this follows a similar problem surrounding san francisco's famous painted ladies in alamo square. the transportation board voted to exclude commercial buses with ten or more seats from that area. there are a number of muni stops near alamo square. locals say it's

ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with more on this horrendous scene, pam.vestigators say the weather may be to blame? >> yeah, we have some new video this morning showing just how bad that gas explosion was. it happened at a jail in pensacola, florida. two people were killed. at least 100 others were injured, including some corrections officers. now, the blast happened late last night and caused part of the escambia county jail to collapse. investigators say severe weather in the area may be to blame. >> the building received extensive flooding as a result of the rain. i don't know if that's directly related to the incident that happened this evening or not. we'll be doing an investigation to determine that. >> now, 5 inches of rain fell on pensacola, florida, in just one hour. and the whole area has seen severe flooding. so that certainly is part of the investigation. now, about 600 inmates were in the jail at the time of the explosion. we heard from a reporter on the scene just about an hour or so ago who says all of the inmates have been accounted for an

pam cook is in the studio with the concerns and the actions to keep people safe. >> good morning.st checked the national weather service website there is a heat advisory for much of the bay area starting at 1:00 today until tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. now that means the weather is particularly dangerous for older people and those susceptible to heat. it means -- heat strokes. it means they are high alert. the drought means a lot of dry brush and increased fire danger. the official start to the season was declared last week. firefighters have been out trimming a lot of the dry brush. they want you to do the same. they say it's important for homeowners to clear defensible space. today is the second spare-the- air day. the bay area district says the combination of high winds and exhaust will create unhealthy conditions. you are being urged to use carpooling or public transportation. they say keep an eye on your neighbors, especially if you live where there's not any air conditioning to help people keep safe. cooling centers have been set up around the bay area including this one in f

reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 7:46. we know more about the mountain lion, the one that wandered into a mountain view apartment complex this week. it was part of a wildlife study. back in january, researchers from the santa cruz puma project put a tracking collar on the mountain lion. they say the mountain lion was with its mother in the basin area until a couple of weeks ago when it went out to find its own territory. researchers believe he crossed interstate 280 monday night and went into mountain view. >> he wandered into the los altos hills and downtown mountain view and at that point in time, he's probably trying to figure out a way to get out but doesn't necessarily know which way is out. >> this case stood out because mountain lions are very active at night, very elusive. the crews eventually tranquilized him and released it outside of the city. the roipers will be -- researchers will be tracking his movements, hoping he doesn't come back to a densely populated area again. >> when you saw the picture of the face,

ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what happened on a sonoma county freeway. pam, good morning. >> good morning. what happened on highway 101 near santa rosa, it started with a man who was pulled over by a chp officer far traffic violation. it turned into a dramatic crash scene. >> a few seconds later i hear a big loud crash. i get slammed. >> his car was hit from behind. he was stunned but after checking to make sure his kids were okay in his car, he looked out on to the freeway and saw a mangled chp car and an officer that needed help. >> i saw the police officer stuck in the car on the door. he couldn't get out, so i saw the gas. i saw the gas and i freaked out. i said i need to get him out as fast as i can. >> chp officer steven rutledge broke both legs when his patrol car was hit from behind. he's still in the hospital this morning. the chp says a 22-year-old woman is who slammed into that patrol car without braking. witnesses heard her saying she fell asleep at the wheel. she was driving home from the graton casino. >>> dozens of arrests so far in a holid

ktvu's pam cook's in our newsroom to show us that video. taken at that school. >> francisco martinez is a sophomore at oakland high school, and he tells ktvu that when he argued with a school security guard, the conversation turned violent. now this is a look at the video. it shows the school security guard there in the white shirt pushing martinez down the hallway. martinez has cerebral palsy and is in a wheelchair. then you see the guard smacking martinez. seconds later he hits him again. >> he slapped me so hard that he threw me out of my chair. i hit the floor with my chin first. i had a scar right here. >> martinez says what the tape does not show is the guard beating him in the elevator just minutes before that scene that was captured on video. the school district says it has fired guard marcell mitchell immediately after the incident. the district says it hired mitchell as a substitute security officer in november and says he did pass a background check. he was arrested by oakland police. he now faces felony charges. reporting live i

pam cook is in the studio with the controversial plan by a local school district. ning, pam. >> the mt. diablo unified school district will consider keying kids in school even if they have lice. now, right now, most schools' policies are to send a child home from school with information about recommended treatment procedures because the bugs can spread to other children. the mt. diablo school board says since head lice does not pose a health risk, it's not responsible for the spread of any disease, kids should stay in school. health professionals also say isolating kids could lead to bullying and have a negative impact on their academic performance. we might be able to blame social media. medical contracts say -- experts say social media plays a big role in lice. when you take selfies, group selfies, your heads are close together. you can also get lice by sharing combs, brushes, hats, helmets and headbands. lies and the debate over keeping kids in school or sending them home will be discussed at the school district meeting tonight at 7:30. toried a dave -- tori and
