good morning, pamela. i want to ask you about his condition in a moment, but, first, i want to talk about that search going on right now for a laptop among other things in that land fill. what exactly led police to this site? >> reporter: well, poppy, according to sources, investigators were led to that land fill in new bedford, massachusetts, based on tips from the suspect himself, dzhokhar tsarnaev, and other people who have been questioned in this investigation. this is the third day investigators are combing through the land fill and hoping to find what is believed to be the laptop of dzhokhar tsarnaev. they believe they can find this laptop, that they will be able to gain critical information, but, of course, this is like finding a needle in a hay stack. this is a very difficult task, but investigators are combing that land fill thoroughly, trying to find more clues. we know that some of the people that gave those tips -- investigators there may have been involved with disposing of the laptop after th

our first report is from pamela brown here in boston. pamela? >> well, john, the suspect is still in the intensive care unit, handcuffed to his hospital bed, with around the clock surveillance by law enforcement officers. as you mentioned he was intubated and sedated with serious injuries. as the investigation continues the focus today is on what charges he will face and when. one week after two deadly bombs exploded in downtown boston, killing three and injuring 183 people, the only surviving suspect remains in serious condition at beth israel deaconess medical center. as federal prosecutors prepare to bring charges against him, law enforcement sources say dzhokhar tsarnaev is unable to talk after a gunshot wound to the neck. exactly when he suffered this injury is still unknown. >> this is a very complex investigation, and it's hard to say exactly how he received that injury. there was certainly a shoot-out in watertown. there were explosives thrown. so that's being looked into right now. it's hard to say exactly how it occurred. >> reporter:

that's where we find pamela brown this morning. what have we learned? >> reporter: we are learning new information this morning. we learned from a department of justice official that federal prosecutors have been here at the hospital since last night figuring out possible charges to bring forward and we're learning from that official that those charges will be coming soon even possibly while the suspect is still here at the hospital. now, we don't know the extent of the charges that will be brought forward but according to the doj official, the suspect will face terrorism charges. he is in federal custody. he will be charged with federal charges and he could face murder charges on the state level. now interesting to note here, there is no death penalty here in the state of massachusetts but the death penalty could be sought on the federal level since that supersedes state charges. no charges have been brought forward yet but we're hearing from a department of justice official that the charges will be brought soon. also any minute now we're waiting for a
