pamela? >> we will be sure to press for answers to those very important questions as we absorb the tragedy here in mayfield and five other states. hard hit area in western kentucky, dawson springs. that is a popular tourist destination. ed, what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're about 70 miles east of where you are and as we pulled into dawson's springs this afternoon, it really looked like an -- the epicenter of an explosive blast that stretched over several miles in the hard of this community. we found homes not just toppled over by the storm, but simply shredded by this tornado. we spoke with some residents who had driven to this area to help the residents who were in these homes that just left in shambles. one resident told us that they spent the night pulling people out of the rubble. many of them with broken bones trying to get them to safe areas where they could be taken away to hospital care. we spoke with another gentleman who was inside a home that was left exactly like this. he sa

pamela, what is the situation like today? >> it's hard to convey, fredericka, just how wide spred the destruction is. as the governor said earlier today there is no lens wide enough to show just the magnitude of the destruction here in mayfield, kentucky. the entire town is wiped out. we've seen people just driving their cars through the main street here just in shock and awe looking at the devastation, but i will say this is a community that has a lot of spirit, a lot of pride. it's a special community, and as you can see or hear behind me, there are already cranes, cruise hard at work clearing up the debris, moving the debris trying to rebuild after this devastating historic tornado came through the town of mayfield, but it certainly is going to be a long road for recovery, but the people here are not deterred. they are determined to move forward. this as search and rescue teams continue to try to find survivors. we have a team of reporters covering the devastation across the region. let's go to cnn's brynn gingras also her

pamela. >> they sure do here in mayfield. i know they are still there at the candle factory doing the hard work. many of them have been up for days. they have worked a full shift since the tornado and have not stopped. paolo sandoval and brirn gingras, thank you so much. fredericka, i've been going around this up to and talking to people. it's amazing to see how many volunteers there are handing out water. i spoke to one family who said that they actually went to church this morning in a sanctuary that somehow was unscathed by the tornado. that's right here in the town square and as you can imagine that sort of fellowship getting together with your fellow community members in the wake of this so important. fredericka? >> the generosity clearly is unstoppable and that began with that night that the tornado hit, some of the first people to jump into action tried to move the debris to save people in that candle factory, just ordinary citizens who came out to help, extraordinary. thank you so much, pamela. check back with you. ho

pamela? >> it's the same way here in mayfield, just -- the devastation is as far as the eye can see. ed lavandera, thank you so much. >>> let's go to edwardsville, illinois, that's the site of the partially collapsed amazon warehouse. the governor spoke last hour. what did he have to say? >> reporter: pamela, as we approach almost 24 hours since that twister touched down here in western illinois and you can see causing that damage behind me and with that partial collapse of this amazon fulfillment center, the governor sharing information that nobody wanted to hear in this part of illinois now. updating that death toll from two to six people confirmed dead at this particular location here. and also, some other disheartening developments to share with you, pamela. authorities on the ground saying that this is now officially transitioning from a search and rescue to a search and recovery effort. one local official here in the last hour saying at this point they have no hope of pulling any surviv
