cnn's pamela brown is on the one of the busiest interstates in the nation. i-95. near exit 8-a. >> reporter: last time we talked about an hour ago, it was smooth sailing for us on i-95 in new jersey. and now the volume is picking up and it's bumper to bumper. and it's really no surprise. because 43 million people are expected to travel this holiday season, 90% hitting the road according to aaa. and a lot of these people are hitting the road today. and sort of compounding the misery of the traveling is the weather. and we're seeing the rain come down. pooling and flooding on highways. in fact, a major highway in philadelphia, i-76, westbound lane shut down. and the other side, only one lane open due to flooding. that's the scene all over the place. they're expected to get worse throughout the morning. more heavy rain the further east you go. and snow the further west you go. there's really causing headaches for travelers. they're just going to have to pack their patience. one person told told me that a typical drive from d.c. to dayton takes ability hours. they sai

pamela brown is in the thick of it. i love that you're live doing this. you got the assignment driving new york to washington on i-95. i started the morning at 5:00 in the morning on i-95. and it was brutal. how are things looking now. >> reporter: we've been on the road since 5:30 this morning eastern time. and it just depends on where you are. we were on the outskirts of connecticut, central new jersey. really, all over the place. we did see some backups and a lot of that was because of accidents and slick conditions on the roads. as you witness yourself ashleigh the rain was coming down pretty hard earlier today. and in fact i-76 in philadelphia, the westbound side of the highway was bun shut down due to a deadly accident. one person killed. the other side of the highway, one lane open due to flooding. we've seen standing part water pooling all over the place. so it's been a really -- a headache for holiday travelers trying to reunite with their families. and i've heard a lot of stories from people who left last night thinking they were going to beat t
