let's bring in our justice correspondent pamela brown. she's in san bernardino for us tonight. pamela, what have authorities learned about farook's actual communications? >> reporter: well, we know the fbi's involved now in this investigation. and so far they've uncovered that syed farook had been in touch with several fbi terrorism subjects, people that were being investigated for possible ties to international terrorism though i'm told by my sources that these people weren't considered the top ten. in other words, high priority terrorism subjects. and they have not been arrested so far on terrorism. but it is still significant in light of what we saw here yesterday that the gunman had been in touch over the past several years with these terrorism subjects. i'm told that at this point in the investigation they have not been able to uncover any very recent communications that he was maybe coordinating or planning with one of these terrorism subjects. i'm told communications are a few weeks out and even a span of a few years. also investigators are looking at possible communicati

i want to turn to the investigation and new information pamela brown is getting for us. what are your sources saying about a possible motive in this case? >> that is still unclear and what they are hoping for is to get the contents from their electronics. we learned there were two cell phones that were damaged and found in a trash can at one of the crime scenes. the cell phones are being sent to the quantico lab and we have learned that while investigators found a computer in the home, the hard drive belonging to that computer is missing. so investigators have had to issue a subpoena for electronic information content from the big providers. they are waiting for that. all of this will be crucial. for what evidence investigators are looking at now there is nothing to indicate a clear cut motive. one source i spoke to said this does not fit neatly into a box. there are suspicions and possible indications they could have been radicalized but nothing to substantiate that. farook had been in touch with people who have not been arrested and have not been recent communications

justice correspondent pamela brown joins me now. pamela, these attacks that enrique marquez is being charged with, what are you learning about these attacks? >> reporter: that's right. we first talked about the attacks last week that marquez and farook wanted to launch, now we're learning how disturbing the plots were. the criminal complaints say sayed farook and his long-time friend planned to use pipe bombs for an attack at riverside community college where they were both students, specifically targeting the library and cafeteria area because they wanted to maximize casualties. they allegedly also planned to start the attack by throwing pipe bombs into the cafeteria from an elevated position on the second floor. in a separate plot marcus told investigators he and farook planned a major attack on a busy highway. farook would allegedly shoot his rifle into the stopped cars and kill people while marquez would shoot law enforcement people. it's very disturbing. >> pamela, i understand there was a dispute within the d.o.j. to bring this

let's begin with our justice correspondent pamela brown. pamela, you're learning more from your sources about this alleged 2012 terror plot that was abandoned. i know cnn you broke it first, what are you finding out? >> well, we've learned that syed farook and his friend, his former neighbor and friend enrique marquez were apparently plotting to launch an attack back in 2012. this is what enrique marquez has been telling investigators. we know he's been questioned over the last several days. and he told investigators that the two had been radicalized as far back as 2011. and in 2012 after marquez had purchased two ar-15s that they had plans in the works and that they were going to launch the attack but that they got spooked. apparently he told investigators they picked out a specific target in the california area. and right now investigators are trying to corroborate the information that marquez gave to investigators, verify the details. we know that just after the san bernardino attack he checked himself into a mental health clinic. so ther

let's get right to cnn's justice correspondent pamela brown. that tashfeen malik posted her views online. you heard in the last block senator ted cruz talking about that how we should have been able to see these facebook messages. director comey tried to bring some clarity to that reporting. >> that's right. it was clear today that the fbi director sought to set the record straight on this issue, jake, saying that nothing in this investigation so far has shown that the u.s. government missed any red flags on either of the terrorist social media pages. today, fbi director james comey made it clear the married terrorists syed farook and tashfeen malik did not publicly post anything on social media that the fbi could have picked up on. but rather communicated privately about jihad away from the eyes of law enforcement. >> in late 2013 before there is a physical meeting of these two people and resulting in their engagement and journey to the united states, they are communicating online showing signs in that communication of their joint commitment to

pamela brown has more on that. she joins me tonight. let's talk motive behind the shooting. what have you learned and what are your sources telling you? >> reporter: it's interesting. officials said this is a case that does not fit neatly into a box and in many ways they are perplexed because it doesn't fit a certain m.o. they are looking whether this was an act of terrorism or workplace dispute or blend of both. what really has thrown off officials is that the fact that the suspect and his wife had an apparent bomb lab in their home to make explosives and had tactical gear and apparently wanted to launch an even bigger attack. these are two people that were not on the fbi's radar. they did not have investigations open on them, so they basically flew into the radar of authorities despite the fact we learned today from sources that syed farook had been in touch over the years with multiple terrorism subjects the fbi had been investigating. i'm told those were not high priority subjects, they were loose connections but the fbi wants to figure out if something was missed and wh
